Painful toilet issue

Bit of an embarrassing one. I’m 4 weeks pp and last week I went to the toilet and experienced pain when I had a poo, it almost felt sharp and then after I had a painful burning pain for about 20 mins. It’s made me so nervous to go again because it was so painful (even after an un medicated birth 😂). Obviously I have been again since and the same thing happened, painful when coming out and then a burning pain for a while after. Has anyone experienced similar? This is my second baby and I didn’t experience anything like this with my first and I’d had an episiotomy.

It sounds like it could be anal fissures, I’d get an appointment with the GP for them to check for sure. It can feel like passing glass when having a poo, it’s usually down to constipation.

I have this exact problem and went to the doctors today, I’ve been given some stool softeners while the fissures sort themselves out

Definitely anal fissures. Tbh a GP wouldn’t do anything other than tell you to be on stool softeners. GPs will step in when fissures fail to close after months and months but most do. The reason for the pain is that the muscle in the anus (sphincter) naturally spasms. This causes reduced blood flow to the anus meaning fissures are hard to heal. You need blood and it’s properties to heal a wound. The spasming vessels cause pain. Worse at night. The only thing that’s gonna get rid of this is having softer stools. Don’t take a tonne of laxatives. They cause a lot of bloating and pressure. Try with doubling the amount of water you drink. Snacking on dried apricots or prunes and having the odd swig of lactulose. Sitz baths are also great for promoting blood flow to the area. They will heal. Just takes patience and alot of pain :(

It sounds like hemeroids which I had after my firstborn from the pushing in labour, very normal and although it’s horrid you can get creams and gels to help. Try eating lots of fibre, dried fruit, prune juice etc so your stools aren’t too hard as that will be very painful.

This was me last week! (And still slightly painful now) I thought the pain was worse than childbirth 😂 still taking fibre gels stool softeners now. The dream has helped a bit.

@Tamsin I’d 2nd this. I had a hemeroid from labour and etc. I was prescribed laxative and also take fybogel. It’s very painful either way bright red blood. It will heal yeah just so difficult. Especially pp when all your energy is on your LO

Constipation and hard stools I've had it for about 2/3 weeks now. I was fine for the first few weeks after birth couldn't stop going to the loo and now they're just hard! Maybe take a senna to soften your stool
