I had my routine booking appointment, 12 week dating scan, then my 16 week appointment which was just blood pressure and a chat - i learnt that most midwives don’t look for a heartbeat at the 16 appointment as they can’t always find it and it causes more stress! but baby hasn’t been scanned since my 12 week appointment and i have my 20 week scan in april! so the appointments are quite sparse. did you not have a 12 week dating scan? X
I’m pregnant with my 2nd and recently had my 16 week checkup and heard the heartbeat. But I know someone else who is always pregnant and they didn’t check the heartbeat at 16 weeks, so I do wonder if it’s down to the Area and what they offer when your pregnant for a 2nd time or more?x
My initial booking appointment I had a blood test done, then I had another where tested wee and listened to heart beat. I’ve had my 20 week scan, next appointment is the 24/25 week one where I get my matB1 form
You have less midwife appointments with your second. So I had one at 9 weeks. Then nearly 15 weeks (no heartbeat or belly measurements at these) with your second you then go back to midwife at 28 weeks. https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/your-pregnancy-care/your-antenatal-appointments/
Thank you so much everyone. This is very useful hearing from you all.
@Megan thank you. I did have a scan for 12 weeks. And have a booked scan for 20 weeks as well. Guess it’s just the routine as per the link shared from nhs website. Thank you mamas
I think it depends what area you’re from, i’ve seen my community midwife at 15w then i don’t see her again until May same as you its so far away 😅 i don’t think ill have any checks on baby’s heart or my belly until 24/25 weeks unless its at my hospital visits for extra monitoring
If no complications you will have less.
This is my first pregnancy to progress beyond the first trimester, so it's the first time I've had appointments with the midwife. I'm 20+3. So far, I've had a 10 week appointment which was quite lengthy and a 16 week appointment that was super quick. I've got another appointment scheduled at 22 weeks to listen to baby's heartbeat. I assume after that is when I'll start having bump measured etc.
In my first pregnancy my bump was never measured and I really don’t think they do that routinely anymore, definitely not in certain areas. But I’m sure if you just ask for all the things you would like for your own reassurance, your midwife will oblige
@Rachel mine was measured often but its so inaccurate I'm not really sure the point.
@Jo the things they do in ‘women’s health’ related medicine is HILARIOUS. That science hasn’t really come on past whipping out a tape measure 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I am having twins this time so I will have regular scans at the hospital.
I’m sure depends on your area. I’m almost 19 weeks and saw my midwife at 10 weeks then scan at 13 weeks and I’ll see her again at 19+1. It’s been such a long time but I’ll hear heartbeat and hopefully get a few more regular appointments.

I recently went for my 16 week appointment and they told me they would start doing measurements/heartbeat etc at my next one in May (26 weeks) and I’d get the matB form then as well x
I am 19 weeks pregnant and apart from having the initial meet with a duty midwife around 10 weeks for urine and blood tests I have not seen a midwife and won’t until I am 20 weeks pregnant. I have my 20 week scan before I see a midwife 😩🙈 very different experience this time round than my first pregnancy
I had my 16 week scan a few weeks ago and they just checked my blood levels and was just a chat. I did ask about hearing the heart beat but she said they don’t do it anymore because at that stage it can be hard to find and causes more stress for mum if they can’t find it. I see my midwife every 8ish weeks then hospital appt for scans every 8 ish weeks so I seem to have something once a month.
I noticed this on my 16 week appointment I had non of the checks done my belly wasn’t measured ect and I did wonder as well if this was normal as my first I had everything done every appointment
