Early scan before travel

Hi all - currently 5 weeks pregnant and over the moon. It was unplanned but we’re rolling with it as we had wanted to start trying later in the year anyway. We had booked our honeymoon to Thailand a few months before finding out about the pregnancy and I will be about 11 weeks when we travel. I'm quite worried about the Zikra virus but travel insurance doesn't cover that as a reason for cancellation - so plenty of mosquito spray instead of perfume. I'm unlikely to have my dating scan before we leave and I was wondering whether we should have a private scan before, just to make sure everything is okay. Not sure if I'm being a total overthinker and would love others' opinions. We haven't told family yet so any advice is appreciated.

Not sure where you’re from but here in the UK, you can get a private scan that early and they refer to it as a “dating scan” to essentially figure out how far along you are and they check for a heartbeat. If you’re anxious, it’s definitely something that would put you at ease before you fly away

Speak to your gp / midwife about ziks risk for sure

Congratulations! I was in a similar situation in that we were planning to go to Vietnam. I think zika can affect babies throughout all of pregnancy can’t it? And having an early scan doesn’t mean you won’t get zika. Im sure it’s highly unlikely that we got zika but at the same time I’m not sure how good counties like Thailand and Vietnam are at reporting their cases… Personally, we decided to cancel the trip, I don’t think I’d be that relaxed while there. If you’ve already paid, could you delay the flights and hotel? Apparently Thailand is a nice place to visit with a baby
