Does anyone else have a alittle one that took alittle longer to fully talk? My son just turned 3 and he says alot of words, colors, numbers, abcs, shapes. But has a hard time forming sentences and have a convo back and forth is this normal? Has anyone elses kiddo took longer? He is the oldest and has a baby brother and doesnt go to daycare so ive wondered if thats why he is taking longer

I always feel mom-shamed for people not understanding my son, he talks a lot he loves talking but they don’t understand him like I do because (I’m mum i know exactly what he’s saying) An old lady said “what language is he speaking?😠” i said English and she rolled her eyes kind of and said “it doesn’t sound like it” all i said back was “yep, it’s English” and walked away

Like when he’s asking what happened he says “hap hap?” Or “I’m going for a walk” is (me go for walk) that’s what she got mad at was when he said he’s going for a walk

My son is 3 1/2 and still doesn't talk in full sentences. It makes me feel like a bad mom sometimes because I see kids that are younger than him speaking like little adults, but then I remember that every child is different and learns at their own pace. My son like yours knows a lot of words just has a hard time with sentences. My son also has a younger sister so that could be a contributing factor. Don't worry your doing a great job and your son will be having full blown conversations with you in no time.

@Ashley Thank you this makes me feel so much better!! Yes its so hard to not compare but every kid is different!

@Darienne yes this is my son he talks non stop but mostly my husband and I can understand plus some family!

@Darienne Thats sad! You are such a good mama and that old lady doesnt know what she is talking about!!!

This me talking to my kid

I'm just the translator 🤣🤣

Check your son for tongue and lip ties (top and bottom) to rule out a physical problem. Have your pediatrician double-check to make sure. If they don't find anything, ask for a referral to speech therapy. (Don't worry, it's great!) Narrate your day and read lots of books. Especially stories that are a little longer than the average board book, as long as you can get him to sit still. There are Corduroy board books that are great if he's not ready for paper pages. When he says hap hap, give him the direction to say "what happened", then answer the question. Teaching basic signs to go with spoken language helps develop language skills. Try to worry enough, but not too much. He understands what's going on, his spoken words will catch up shortly.

My son is the same way, literally so smart with single words but has trouble he goes jfjcnanjf fishing djfjjen sharks 😂 I’m like I got a few pieces from that or can say fragments we go store etc totally normal

Boys generally take longer in speech. We did early intervention because I was worried.. but I was only worried because I had 3 girls prior to my first boy. When I am out at play groups etc. my son is pretty on track with the other boys his age. He was 3 in March. Still quite difficult to communicate with verbally. There's 3-4 word sentences when he's in the mood for them 🤣

If you have concerns, you can reach out to your local school district and request a free evaluation and possibly qualify to receive free speech services through them. I am a special needs preschool teacher and am part of this process with my district. Just remember that at age 3, kids should only be ~50% understandable to an unfamiliar listener and using 2-3 word phrase. As long as they are meeting those milestones, you are doing a okay.

My daughter is on the younger side but does have a slight tongue and lip tie that she gets from my side of the family. She's about 18 months and still only says a few words but strangely has been able to say, "What's that?" well enough at times that strangers understand her. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'm getting her involved with my state's early intervention just to be on the safe side. A big thing I'm learning as a first time mom is that kids really develop at their own pace and that is FINE. Our culture of rushing kids is the worse, you're doing just fine mama!

@Tasha he will do 2 word sentences alot! A couple 3-4 word sentences when you ask him to. I can understand everything id say my family can understand like 30-50% of what he says. His peds doctor isnt worried he said he has time and he is still young but he told me about i could go through the school possibly to see what they say! We are a super small school but im sure they have something. We do teachers as parents right now so could bring it up at our next meeting!

Are you okay with screen time? My oldest is 5 & started watching Ms. Rachel at 1.5 & I feel it has always helped with a lot of his development. My daughter is 3 years & 3 months & she talks way better than her brother did at her age. Neither have ever really been to daycare or preschool. Since your 3 year old is the oldest, he might just need a little more exposure to speech. Narrate everything! Tell him what you are doing, why you’re doing it. Use every opportunity as a way to make conversation with him. I do feel like the back & forth conversations don’t really happen until 4-4.5 years old, though. I might ask my 3 year old a question, to which she replies “I don’t know” lol. If you’re really worried by 3.5-4, I would look into a speech therapist. It’s awesome that he already knows so much by his age, though.

@Darienne sometimes I have to translate for my husband because I’m with my kids 24/7 & have learned their “language” lol.

My 3 year old is non verbal but he’s autistic. My 16 year old didn’t speak until he was nearly 4 then it just came out of nowhere. I feel like us mums put way too much pressure on ourselves for this kind of thing, every child is different and will do things when they are ready

@Katie I love this! Yes we watch ms rachel from time to time and my boy really likes blippi and he copies alot of stuff he says too! Yes thats what im thinking too! Yes our doctor said if by 4 he is about the same then we can look into speech but he thinks he is just going at his own pace and thats okay! Thank you! Yes he is on track with everything else so thats why im not worried to bad! The doctor says he is still young give him time❤️

@Sam Yes I do too! I try not to compare and every kid is different and we should just enjoy the process and not stress❤️

@Katie same!!
