Transvaginal Ultrasound

Went to get an ultrasound for an unrelated issue . At the time of my visit I’ve been having a hunch that I may be pregnant, I have also been feeling flutters and although I know it’s soon, I’ve been pregnant before so I’m familiar with the feeling. Could the ultrasound specialist have been able to tell me if I’m pregnant or would they have to relay the information to my doctor who then has to be the one to tell me the information?

The ultrasound techs are not allowed to tell you anything. Legally they can get in a lot of trouble. Depending on where you are and if the office has them, nurses could tell you, otherwise they'd tell the doctor and the doctor tells you

They can't even tell you the sex of the baby without first getting the doctors confirmation and approval

Ok, I had a feeling that was the case. In my experience when I’ve gotten ultrasounds they leave the screen visible when they walk out the room and this time she closes the monitor. So my mind is thinking all sorts of things. I guess I’ll just wait and see. Thanks for your response 🙏🏼

They're supposed to close the monitor and everything, technically its malpractice if they don't because depending on what they leave open you can see other people's information. For example at the fertility clinic I used, there were times they closed the images but not the monitor, so as I was changing I could see the list of other patients scheduled that day and their gestation and stuff like that, which is a huge breach of privacy

The reason they can't tell you anything is because they aren't the most specialized in reading the images, just taking them. They take the images, measurements of what they see, make a preliminary report (usually theyres a layout for them to just fill with their measurements). Those then go to a radiologist, which is a doctor who specializes in reading images, and the radiologist confirms the measurements, makes a more thorough report with what they see on the images (example if there's a spot they can say based on the images it could be a cyst, fibroid, etc) and send the report to the ordering doctor, who will then relay the information to you. (I work in healthcare, can you tell, lol)

Yes very insightful. I was definitely able to see all the appointments before and after me down to name and type of ultrasound . I was just to able to see the images she took during mine . 😵‍💫
