Childcare - childminding

Going back to work soon and thinking about using a childminder instead of full time nursery. What are some things you look for in a childminder? ALSO I receive UC will they help towards the childcare costs for a childminder rather than nursery?

Is there another parent at home or just you? I ask cos there is funding for working parents from the term after baby is 9 months so that may help more than UC childcare would. Out of interest why a childminder over a nursery?

@Natalie I’m a single parent and because it works out cheaper for a childminder as they’re more flexible with timings rather than having to send my child full time nursery

My little boy goes to a childminder instead of nursery, it’s a lot cheaper. His childminder is amazing and he loves going there. They go on lots of outings, or if they’re at home they’re always making something so they’re always busy! Not about UC though as I’m not on it

If it's just you and you are going back to work more than 16 hours you should be entitled too. Childminders should accept either funding. Fair enough. We use a nursery for many reasons but mainly cos if the childminder is ill you are stuck without childcare which I'm not personally a fan of.

I also use a childminder as it’s cheaper and she accepts funding.

I looked at how many children they have, the age range, how close by, hours they can do, what activities they do with the children and what their costs include eg meals x

I use a childminder and get the return to work funding. Childminder.com will list childminders with their qualifications, feedback and DBS checks. I can’t fault my childminder, but make sure you visit them as I visited one and it didn’t feel right for me, but the one I used seemed perfect when I met her

@Amy does your childminder do full time or does she work around yourwork hours? Want to know how flexible they can be compared to nursery

@Hannah ah nice that makes sense, does your childminder do full time or does she work around your hours? Want to know how flexible they can be compared to nursery x

@Francesca ah I’ve never heard of return to work funding, what is it? And okay thank you will check it out

They do 8am-5.30pm every week day and then I just needed to say what days / hours I need them for :)
