Every child goes at their own pace, it’s to early to say he needs speech therapy, just read to him regularly and point things out at home he may use or see regularly like shoes or coat, bird or dog, cat and say the words Everytime you grab those items or see those things and he’ll eventually pick it up

@LayCee thats what we doing today we usually point out colors and shapes and numbers but now im trying that

I would not say it’s too early and honestly it can’t hurt! Studies have shown that the sooner interventions are made for speech issues, the better the long term academic outcomes will be.

Mines only just now turning 18m tomorrow (born oct 30th lol) he's picking up a new word what seems like every week. But he's still not at what my pediatrician wants him to be at, which is 50-100 words. He's at maybe 10 now, including mama/Dada. But I have also heard that there's a huge vocabulary boom between 18-24m. I'm getting on an evaluation list just in case.

@Charlotte for these milestones, animal sounds and signed words count, too! So he may be closer than you think.

Listen to your doctor. I'm sure your son will catch up but you want to take advantage of every service offered to him especially if it's not done invasive. Speech therapy won't hurt one bit.

@Anna 100 percent.

We have more or less 10 excluding signed words and animal sounds. Some words he tries but it's not right. Like he calls milk "bully" 🤷‍♀️. I would mostly look for progress, and testing if he understands (mine points to some body parts). If I count signed words, animal noises, and words that are off but consistent we're about 50. If his doctor suggested it I would do it to get a second opinion and tips. Early intervention won't do any harm.

Mine is saying closer to the 100 words end, I don't keep track because it's a lot but all kids are different, it doesn't have anything to do with how smart they are so I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep talking and reading to them

My 18 month old is saying over 182 words, not including animal sounds. But she is also bilingual and some words are in english while others are in spanish. She can also count to 20 in english and to 10 in spanish, so that's including numbers also. And I agree, all kids are different and tend to develop whatever skill interests them the most

My bubbles a lot of different sounds but actual words I can hear are mama and dada. He turned 18 months 4 days ago and his appt next week😁 I feel like he is trying to repeat ball and dog but honestly, I could hear what I wanted to hear. We will probably get the same speech as you did 😄
