Reaction to formula?

I’ve been EBF for 6 months, so far baby has refused a bottle but since weaning he’s been drinking out a cup well so I thought I’d try milk in a cup (as I need to get him used to something for nursery etc). I used readymade formula as we had some and because I tried pumping and was struggling with blocked ducts. I just wanted to see if he’d take it and he had about 60mls yesterday afternoon. Today he’s so far done 5 poos getting more and more runny/watery and muscousy. Normally he would do 1 a day but since weaning started 3 weeks ago he’s been fairly constipated and sometimes would only poo every 2 days so 5 in a day is a lot for him. Food wise the last couple of days have just been things he’s had before. 3 days ago he had salmon for the first time but feel like if it was a reaction to that it would have shown sooner? Feels like formula is the likely culprit, wondering if anyone else has had this/agrees?? I guess there’s so many ingredients in there.

Do you consume a lot of dairy in your diet? Just wondering as the increase in bowel movements and mucus following formula reminds me of when my son stared with his CMPA. Might not be though! xx

Yeah I do. And since we started weaning 3 weeks ago he’s been having cows milk in purées at first and now in porridge/weetabix (as of 5 days ago) so I would have thought we’d have had symptoms sooner than this if it was that? It had crossed my mind though.

It took my baby 3 months to show all the symptoms and my friends 8! It can be a delayed onset. Particularly because with babies it takes more exposure for them to develop the allergy if that makes sense. Some need a certain level of exposure before the immune system reacts. Also the CMP in your breast milk is significantly lower than direct cows milk. Some people decide to try amptimil pepti 1 which is a formula with the CMP broken down so the babies gut doesn't have to do as much work and somehow they can cope with that so they don't react. Where as some need purely hypoallergenic milks without CMP xx

Interesting! I’m going to hold off on giving formula again for a while and see if he improves. If he doesn’t then it may well be the cows milk I’m giving him in cereal. Or this could all be coincidental and he has a bug! It’s a minefield x

I thought babies aren’t supposed to have cows milk til after they turn 1? I could be wrong though

@Elle they can have it mixed in food from 6 month. Just not as a drink until 1

@Elle as op says, fine to have in cooking and food, just not as their main milk drink until 1. Then they can have green or blue milk as their drink.

I think it's likely the formula. Ready made definitely has more of a laxative effect
