Uterine artery doppler

I'm 22 weeks pregnant and today went for a uterine artery doppler (due to having pre eclampsia with my first son) which confirmed "PI is raised" which translates to the placenta isn't functioning as well as it should be so I'm at further risk of pre term birth/developing pre eclampsia again and having a small baby. With my first son I never had this scan and my pregnancy all went well until I hit 36 weeks. This time it feels like there's a lot more worry and expectation that somethings going to go wrong at some point. I'll be having regular growth scans now to keep on top of it and am having to weekly monitor blood pressure and urine protein so at least I'll know if something isn't right. Just wondering if anyone else has been through this before and what their outcomes were. Thanks!

Hi Katie, I hope you’re doing okay with the worry. I had pregnancy induced hypertension with my daughter and the start of preeclampsia. It also didn’t hit until 36 weeks but I am having the uterine artery Doppler during my 20 week scan next week. I feel relieved that they are keeping an eye on things more this time but it does make me a bit nervous! I’m glad you’re being monitored and hope everything goes well ❤️ xx

@Isabelle sounds like we're having a very similar experience! Hope your scan goes well next week. This pregnancy has been a lot more full on! X

@Katie thank you so much! Hope it all goes well for you too! I know! I feel like I’m at the hospital every week! Xx

Hi Katie! How are you? I just had my 20 week scan and they told me that I had raised PI too but there was no doctor to explain anything! Did they give you any more information? X

@Isabelle hiya, I'm good thank you. I think if you've had pregnancy induced Hypertension or pre eclampsia in previous pregnancies it's more likely that it will happen again which is why they do the scan. It wasn't explained to me in great detail either to be honest, all I know is that they look at the two arteries that run to the umbilical cord and that's what the PI values are, if they are high (above 95th centile I believe) then it confirms you are at higher risk of all the above complications and there's literally nothing you can do other than aspirin and monitoring. Hope you're feeling okay about it today!

@Katie thank you so much for replying Katie! I felt so anxious yesterday but I guess it’s to be expected that it would be high after having high blood pressure in my last pregnancy. They just booked me in for a 28 week scan and left it at that so they must not be too worried I assume! I am trying to take that as a good sign xx
