GBS diagnosis

About 3weeks ago I went to triage as I had severe pgp and was struggling to walk. There’s a urine sample that was taken & a week later was informed I have GBS & advised to get my antibiotic prescription at the pharmacy. I haven’t had a chance to pick it as I moved & live quite far away from my hospital & I don’t want to change it now I’m a few weeks to delivery. Also the rating & service of my hospital is really good so thought it’d be wise to keep it. I’ve been wondering what GBS is about & been worrying the past few days as I haven’t gone for the prescription yet. In my pregnancy, I’ve been given antibiotics twice already for other issues so I’m also a bit concerned with the too much antibiotics messing up with my microbiome. Anyways for those who got a diagnosis, did you take the antibiotics immediately? Also, if antibiotics will solve the problem now, why do they need to give you more antibiotics during labour?

Antibiotics need to be taken immediately, as in certain rare situations the infection can spread and contaminate the uterus if left untreated. It's a risk not worth taking imo. Also, as a person that had a kidney infection before, uti can lead to that, and trust me this is not something you want to go through.

With respect to why need antibiotics in labour, this is a matter that has been discussed quite a bit in that group so I urge you to look at previous posts. But in summary, the antibiotics treat the infection at the time it occurs but because strep b is found naturally in our body it can reappear within weeks or days (without causing a UTI) and you dont want the baby contracting it during labour.
