Suspected delays/ autism

Sorry if this isn’t the right place to post this but I have an eighteen month old boy and we’ve just seen the health visitor about some concerns I had regarding his speech and some behaviours he exhibits which can be early signs of autism. She did an assessment and said that I was right he is delayed in certain areas and told me to get a referral to speech therapy for him and she’d come back in a few weeks to complete a SOGS assessment. I have no idea what to do to help him. I try to set out activities for him but he isn’t interested in them, he just cries when I try to do any activity with him outside of the ones he’s used to. He likes playing with his water table and helping with cooking/ baking my mixing things and throwing but other than that he just isn’t interested and gets quite upset when you try to get him to engage. For example earlier we were trying to get him to do finger painting but he wasn’t interested in it at all and cried when I wouldn’t let him dump the cup of water for the paints all over the floor. He won’t let me read to him because he tries to turn the pages of a book before I’m finished with them and cries if I won’t let him do it, he won’t engage in any activities to encourage speech. I just don’t know what to do? Does anybody else have a similar situation and how do you cope/ support them?

Have you tried sensory play with him? He may be sensory seeking. Also he may be used to the routine of how things might of been so you making him try or do new things might be a little overwhelming for him. My son was diagnosed last month and he’s 3 an also non verbal. But Ms.Rachael, super simple songs, hey bear, are some of the things I would put on that helped him a little with taking ( more like echoing lol)

My son is 3 and autistic and is the same he doesn’t really engage in any activities I’ve tried, even at nursery he doesn’t. He will want to throw a ball with me ‘sometimes’ what I find is if I leave him to do whatever he’s doing it’s much better because he’s happy doing that.

My son is 5 level 3 autistic non verbal he was severely delayed at age 2-4 years then he started school and he has done sling way starting to say more than 3 words.etc. I did slit if water play with him at age 2-4 I would sing songs as we played in the water. He screamed uf I put play school on. He is very sensory reactive paint play doh etc freaks him out . Your son needs an occupational therapist to help him through My son couldn't do tummy time till age of one and walked at almost age 3 years. Follow your child's lead engage what interests them, introducing new things with hand over hand that means guide your child's hand with your hand on top it helps with conifidence but also they feel supported too rather than doing it alone

@Sam yes we have plenty of sensory toys and we so tuff tray activities for him as well. Thank you will give that a try x

@Peanut Shell thank you I will give the hand thing a try x
