Reflux/silent reflux

Anyone else’s newborn suffering? I feel so sad for her and to watch her struggle and feel like it’s so common yet I have nobody to talk to about it! I’ve done so much research about it, yet there really is no support when it comes to mums seeing their baby in pain!

Yep. My baby has reflux/silent reflux. It doesnt affect him too much in terms of he's not screaming and crying with it but I can tell when its happening. Ive tried infacol but doesnt seem to help at all and ive gone through the tips if paced feeding, winding, sitting upright etc. I went to the doctors and mentioned it as I was there for other things regarding my son and they were like "it will pass". Really wish there was more help as its not nice. 😞

I suspect my newborn has reflux too. He brings up milk all the time, sometimes it’s a lot, sometimes just a bit of vomit. Started after week 3. Have you contacted health visitor?

My baby girl is the same. She spits up a lot but sometimes she projectile vomits all she's eaten, plus milk that's been sitting for a while so it's curdled. I feel awful for her, but luckily she doesn't seem too bothered. Took her to the GP twice and they prescribed her gaviscon (she's 3 weeks old) so we'll be trying that soon to see if it helps xx

@Emma my little girl doesn’t scream at all, she cries occasionally when it’s giving her pain, but she 100% has silent reflux and I just can’t bare the thought of the GP fobbing me off! Infacol is rubbish I think! I hate that these babies have to just deal with it, just awful!! Does your baby suffer with constipation at all?

@Tasha yes he does. I see him struggling and squirming to poo and pass wind loads. In fact he's been struggling since 4am with wind and reflux. Currently fast asleep on my chest. X Yeah I really hate how we get fobbed off. One thing ive learned since becoming a parent is how bad women's care is and the lack of support/information there is on anything related to women's care and/or having children.

My first had silent reflux which wasn’t picked up till we went to hospital for another reason. He was then put on baby gaviscon that was prescribed by the doctor. This helped lots but did cause constipation so also ended up on a laxative too. My little girl is just over 3 weeks, I’m certain she has reflux too be it not always silent. She also currently has oral thrush so the GP has told me to wait till the thrush has cleared if I still think she has reflux to bring her back for them to assess. With the GP etc. you need to be willing to push and advocate for baby. I had to do this load for my sons tongue tie and with my little girl they listened straight away to me.

It’s so awful isn’t it? My little girl was born 8 weeks early but shes 3 weeks corrected now. She was prescribed omeprazole when in hospital. When she left they gave us the dispersible tablets which are a right pain and we were advised the liquid form is much more effective. I asked the GP for it and had to push to trial it and was told as it’s so expensive, if it only makes a little difference she’ll have to go back to the tablet form. That was after I explained she can be in pain for hours overnight! I’ve just managed to get the repeat prescription for the liquid form after sending a very direct email about the benefits but so frustrating support isn’t just there!

@Emma I’m sure the struggling to poo is also linked to the reflux! Mine is the same! She’s gone 3 days, this is the 4th day since the last poo! So sad!! Bless him! She seems so much more settled when she’s sleeping upright on my chest too!! Yes I agree, and usually the GPs are men, who have no real care for women’s mental health being affected by the issues with their children! It’s so sad!

Mine does maybe 1 poo every 24 hours or so but it is definitely hard for him. Can't imagine him going for 2 to 3 days. Your poor girl! My son definitely sleeps better on my chest too! You are so right. I think all the GPs in my surgery are men and though they are nice enough they don't understand and often dismiss things whether its us or us advocating for our children. So sad!

@Emma thankfully just after I replied to you earlier she did a huge one! It’s horrible seeing her uncomfortable because of the reflux and the poo situation! We have a Nuna swing and this seems to be one of the only places she can settled, as it’s nice and upright! I just find most (obvs not all) male GPs have no empathy for issues when it comes to women and babies! Sad reality isn’t it!!

My little one (11weeks) is the same, struggling with reflux and constipation. Every time we put him down to sleep he is constantly clearing his throat, grunting, gagging and is often sick. The only way he will sleep properly is being held. We were told it could be cows milk protein allergy so did 3 weeks dairy free but it seemed to make him worse! I asked the GP for Omeprazol and was prescribed the tablet which is so hard to give as it’s so watery and all the actual medicine seems to get left in the syringe! I called the GP yesterday and asked for the liquid version, the receptionist said she’d pass the message to the GP and then she called back said he said a liquid version doesn’t exist, even though it says on the nhs website it does and I see so many people on here with the liquid!! So frustrating and feel like we’ve tried everything else!
