Dogs and babies in cars... suggestions?

Hi! I'm due our first baby in August and we have 2 sausage dogs. At the moment when we take them in the car they sit in the back seat with dog seat belts, however when baby is here I would rather them be blocked off from the baby but still in the back seat. Does anyone have any suggestions of products or things that worked for them please? Ideally I dont want to have to put them in a cage in the boot!

Thanks Eliza, we've tried those before and the little monkeys jump out of them!

I have a dog, and I have her in the boot connected to one of the metal hooks. This way she’s secure and can’t get to the baby. No cage needed 😊 x

Get a seat that attaches to their harness so they cant jump out, thats what ive got for my 2 Chihuahuas xx

I would use the above suggestion with the dog seat belts that go round the back of the head rests. You can adjust the length on them. It might be a bit of a training exercise to keep them in the dog. Try getting them used it it by putting high reward treats in there. Have it in the house for a few days and gibe them bones or other long last high reward treats in there and as long as they stay there they can munch away. Then try it in the car while it's stationary. Then on a short journey and slowly build it up from there. That box or a car crate are your best option without opting for the boot

If you’re thinking of the boot trial it first. We have 3 sausages and our first baby due in July, we trialed them in the boot yesterday on a short drive and they spent the whole time crying and trying to climb over the back seat 🤦🏼‍♀️ We are putting the car seat in the car in June to get them used to it and see how they react/are with it

Those that have said theirs go in the boot, may I ask how your pram/pushchair fits? 😬

We put our dog on the front passenger seat and I go in the back with our baby.

I have my baby in the front seat with the passenger air bags off, dog in back, pram in boot

@Josie my boot has 2 level pram goes under and the dogs sit on the top level x

I agree with the dog booster seat, but also using a harness and the dog seatbelt attached to the harness. That way, you won’t have to worry about the dog getting loose in the car

I have a sausage dog and 6 week old baby , my dog sits in a car seat harness clipped in so he can’t get to my baby

Our dog goes in the boot with a seatbelt fed through from the middle seat currently; it might be worth trialling, even if you don’t do it very often, to get them used to it as for at least a few journeys one of you will probably want to be sat in the back with baby x
