Coffee

Coffee drinkers, I am currently 5 weeks pregnant. I’ve been reading that you aren’t supposed to drink coffee while pregnant. I drink coffee every morning so it’s been tough having coffee withdrawals since I cut it out completely. What is a good substitute? Did you cut out coffee when you were pregnant?

You can have one cup of coffee a day

Avatar

I’ve been having one cup every morning. Currently 33 weeks and baby is healthy. I couldn’t cope with work if I didn’t have my morning coffee x

Avatar

I drank coffee during pregnancy I think one a day is fine just dont over do it x

Avatar

I’ve switched to decaf coffee! At first it definitely doesn’t taste the same but you do get used to it. I can now hardly tell the difference!

Avatar

The advise is to have no more than 200mg of caffeine a day so you should be absolutely fine with a coffee (depending on the size of course), i tend to google the caffeine content of things if unsure just to check as I couldn’t survive without a caffeine fix - pregnancy insomnia has hit me hard 😅

Avatar

You can have a cup or two a day

Avatar

Don’t deprive yourself honestly. Just have one a day x

Avatar

I have one cup in the morning and maybe once or twice a week I'd have an icy coca cola x

Avatar

I had coffee daily, but limited it to one cup

Avatar

I have coffee every morning & and an iced one in the afternoon. Third pregnancy and 37 weeks. I would say keep enjoying your coffee

Avatar

Read Emily Oster’s book called Expecting Better.

Avatar

Pssshhhh I drank only one cup a day and I was fine. Both of my girls are healthy and huge, just depends on genetics honesty and how well you deal with coffee.

Avatar

I used to have a cup a day, and I would substitute one or two more decaf

Avatar

I work in the coffee industry and definitely had more than the advised amount of caffeine in both my pregnancies. Both boys have turned out absolutely fine!

Avatar

Same, one a day or 2 teas and the rest decaf.. keep in mind chocholate and fizzy drinks also have coffeine in them so u have to add them to ur daily intake

Avatar

You can have 200mg of caffeine a day which is equivalent to 3 shots of espresso from Starbucks. So that’s a venti hot latte with an extra shot or a venti iced latte as is 🙌🏻

Avatar

I have at least one cup a day

Avatar

I used to have two ice lattes a day and I’ve personally cut all caffeine out besides the tiny bit that’s in fizzy drinks now and then! It’s just my personal choice though. Everyone else I know who’s been pregnant has had the recommended 200mg a day which is 2 cups of coffee x

Avatar

On the nhs site your allowed 200mg of caffeine a day I believe

Avatar

No you’re allowed just not over 200mg

Avatar

I have one normal coffee in the morning then I drink decaffeinated the Rest of the day x

Avatar

I drank Starbucks almost everyday when I was pregnant with both my kids. I always got coffee at Starbucks too

Avatar

My doctor recommended no more than cup a day to avoid my migraines 🤷🏻‍♀️

Avatar

I had a cup of cappuccino every morning

Avatar

You can still drink coffee, just be careful not to have too much caffeine (so don’t have lots of coffee, coke and chocolate!)

Avatar

I switched to decaf or half caf if I’m sleepy that day. My doctor recommended no more than 200mg of caffeine a day which is like one 12 oz home brewed regular coffee.

Avatar

I would just drink decaf but as my pregnancy progressed I had a serious aversion to coffee, I couldn’t stand the smell of it never mind the taste of it. Even though I lived for coffee before I became pregnant with my daughter, I wouldn’t even have my eyes open yet amd I would be thinking about my coffee. So hopefully you will hate it soon and then you won’t feel like you’re missing it lol. But don’t worry, if this happens, your love for it should return fairly quickly

Avatar

I just had decaf instead whilst I was pregnant and I still have it now!

Avatar

I just kept it to one cup of coffee in the mornings. And sip lightly. No problems here

Avatar

I have a regular coffee in the mornings then switch to decaf. There’s more caffeine surprisingly in tea! 😊

Avatar

A small coffee everyday is totally ok. 200mg of caffeine max is the recommended limit, I tried to limit myself to 3 days a week and drank lots of green tea for caffeine if I needed it

Avatar

I switched to decaf for a week until I went totally off hot drinks with my nausea and aversions. I’m 9w now and had one weak real coffee over the weekend. I’ll continue to mostly stay off caffeine until 12w

Avatar

200 mg of caffeine is okay. That's 2 8oz cups of coffee a day 😉

Avatar

Unless you read that in your specific care instructions from your dr, then it’s incorrect. The guideline is up to 200mg per day. Just remember there are a lot of sources of caffeine like coffee, tea, chocolate, soda,

Read Expecting Better book by Emily Oster - has the actual data about why you should or shouldn’t do certain things like drink caffeine whilst pregnant. I cut back to one cup a day. It’s up to you, some people don’t mind quitting, others really struggle so read the book then decide for yourself once you know what the actual risks are. For example they say you shouldn’t come into contact with cat litter whilst pregnant but actually you’d have to empty litter trays from at least 3 kittens (mature cats don’t carry the same bug) daily and not wash your hands for it to be harmful. Caffeine has been linked to increase in heart rate and arrhythmias in the foetus but it’s a lot of caffeine and it’s still rare. You can get low caffeine coffee which might help you cut back with fewer issues with withdrawal.

Avatar

Emily Oster’s book Expecting Better said that any issues were correlation with coffee drinking/nausea, not causation, and if you want to stick to 1-2 cups a day that’s probably fine. I’ve had coffee when I feel like it, which isn’t often with nausea, but I’m not cutting it out. You should get a copy of her book if you’re curious! She reviews all the studies, I found it super helpful.

Avatar

You can have small amounts of coffee but nothing over the top, usually 1-2 regular size cups a day is fine

Avatar

When I was pregnant I had every day a latte, sometimes 2,everything was fine in pregnancy and I have a healthy baby. You can have up to 200mg of caffeine a day.

Avatar

Not really related but watch The Let Down on Netflix, Aussie show and the first episode has the funniest scene about drinking coffee and judgement

Avatar

Tbh, I did drink coffee at the beginning and then my body just turned on me and the smell of tea or coffee made me physically sick throughout the pregnancy. I switched to water tbh, I had about 2.30L of water a day (based on my height and weight 😄)

Avatar

I never stopped drinking a cup of coffee every morning. I’m 36 weeks and she’s perfectly healthy.

Avatar

I still had my cup of coffee every morning and had no problems in my pregnancy ☺ I got told it was still safe as long as you don't go mad and have like 10 cups a day haha I think it was recommended no more than 2/3 a day 😊

Avatar

I drank coffee with all 4 of my kids. I just stayed under 200mg of caffeine.

Avatar

I was coffee obsessed, having 2-3 cups a day until i found out i was pregnant. Then i decided to go cold turkey. It was hard, withdrawal headaches lasted for a good week or 2 but after that it was easier. I ended up being put off by the smell in the end and swapped to herbal teas as it was all i could stomach.

But, you can have up to 200ml of it so if you find it hard to give up then you dont necessarily have to x

Avatar

Okay! Thank you ladies!! 😍

Avatar

I was a big coffee drinker now I can’t drink it makes me exhausted 😴 I drink 6~8 bottles of water a day had a slight withdraw but I’m fine now at 8 weeks

Avatar

I had 1 to 2 cups a day and the the odd extra decaff. Both my girls are perfect. Don't worry just stick to the recommended 1 to 2 x

Avatar

One or two coffees are okay.

Avatar

I cut coffee during pregnancy, if was hard but I made it through! I did have a decaf every now and then

Avatar

You should stay under 200mg which is one cup. Best to avoid but if you can just stick with one cup
