Steak

I’m almost 9 weeks preggers and have been craving STEAK 😋😋 I read an article that said it’s not recommended to eat medium rare steak and that it needs to be well done if you’re going to eat it. Any of you ladies ate steak while pregnant?

I did, lots of it 😂 Cooking it more means less of a chance of harmful bacteria that could be passed on to your baby but steak itself is totally healthy!

I did. I only had medium rare maybe 2 or 3 times while I was pregnant. And I didn't eat a jumbo steak to myself. Just enough to get that taste I needed.

You just can’t have it bleeding/pink. You’ll have to cook it through with no pink

Avatar

You can but it does need to be cooked. It’s a risk normally for it to be pink or or red but during pregnancy it’s even riskier. Same with sushi. Can’t eat that really.

I ate it. And I ate it rare. Everything is good in moderation don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Eat what you want mama

I cant have well done steak, It’s a waste isn my opinion.. so i freeze it first and then eat it rare, apparently it Does the trick!

If you eat a pink or bloody streak it's not gonna kill you or baby! 😂
I understand people like to be better safe than sorry though.
Just make sure you use food safety when preparing it, like if it's frozen, thaw it over night in the fridge, NOT ROOM TEMPERATURE OR HOT WATER.
The only worry is your immune system is lowered because you're giving all your nutrition to baby, so you're more susceptible to food borne illnesses. To be honest though, I've eaten medium rare steaks and runny eggs my whole life and never once had a food borne illness.

Some will comment here and say “I did” but are you willing to risk your baby’s health for a meal? I eat rare steak once a week but I went 9 months without it and it was just fine. I know cravings are real but sacrificing is apart of motherhood and it starts with being healthy during pregnancy. You’re going to be a great mom and congratulations!

I ate medium rare to rare steak fairly regularly when I was pregnant and my baby is perfectly fine and healthy.

My sister LOVES rare steak and while pregnant she ordered it medium, and occasionally med rare but not often. She just had her son a week ago and has already been talking about going out for rare steak😂

Avatar

I've avoided it but honestly, I went off meat during my 1st and most of my 2nd trimester but beef mainly so I've not missed it. We've just made sure when we do eat steak or pork fillet and things it's been cooked through, it doesn't have to be cooked to death and be like shoe leather lol xx

High quality medium steak shouldn’t be a problem, the risk is toxoplasmosis and rare ground meat/unwashed vegetables/gardening are all much more of a risk. I’d read Emily Oster’s Expecting Better and then make the call that feels right for you. I’ll eat a medium fancy steak but not a rare hamburger, personally. And I’m tested for toxo monthly.

If your food has been stored well and cooked in a clean and safe environment I don’t think there’s any harm!
I’ve not changed anything I’ve eaten, just cut out caffeine and alcohol and all is going well!

I absolutely love steak and I usually have it rare but I’ve had it well done with no pink since being pregnant just to be safe

Red meat is a great source of iron! Well done steak is disappointing but if you get a really good cut of steak, it’s delicious even if it’s well done !

Avatar

I actually had steak last week! I opted to have it well done, but I much prefer it medium.
Even tho it was well done it really hit the spot and the craving I was having, well worth it!!!

Avatar

I have but had it cooked through, best steak to have well done is ribeye

Avatar

I ate medium rare steak weekly

Avatar

I ate whatever my baby let me. (I puked from about 3weeks pregnant to delivery and all day)

Avatar

With my son I craved it alll the time. But I o it ever like my steak well done. I ate it everyday 🤣 as long as it’s cooked throughout there’s no issues eating it

Avatar

I ate my steak medium well or well done most of my pregnancy and it was HELL lol but I was too scared to risk it

Avatar

I ate steak but followed the rule on well done - the risks are low but the consequences would be awful.

I recommend getting a fatty cut of meat, like a ribeye, and slow cooking it (maybe in extra oil). You can get rid of all the pink but still come out with juicy deliciousness!

My doctor said I could eat whatever I wanted in moderation (other than super high mercury types of fish) so I ate medium rare steak several times while pregnant.

I do NOT eat well done steak. In my opinion, if it's a well done steak it's ruined lmao. I've had rare steak since I was literally 3 years old. I have mine medium rare currently and absolutely no problems.

Avatar

I had medium or medium rare steak throughout my pregnancy. I also ate dippy eggs and homemade raw cookie dough. You have to weigh the risks for yourself. I was comfortable eating those things because they were part of my regular diet before I got pregnant, I ate the steak and/or eggs weekly.

Avatar

The problem is not eating the steak the problem is eating it medium rare due to the fact that it can cause Toxoplasma Gandhi it's a parasite that causes an infection that destroys the placenta that can cause real harm to the fetus such as premature labor low birth weights and brain problems in your fetus

Avatar

Yes I would always order steak tips.It was my preggy craving.

Avatar

I've eaten steak when pregnant just made sure it was well done and no pink bits

Avatar

I totally agree that steak is not advised to be eaten undercooked because your immunity is low and should you catch a viral stomach bug it could be difficult lt to fight off and cause complications. Doesn’t mean this happens to everyone. Others eat anything and they have been fine with their pregnancy. it’s scary if you are that unlucky one though. Having said that I just realised I had chicken livers and I’m not supposed to🤣 I did have medium rare steak at 20 weeks but won’t be making a habit of it.

Steak is fine rare as long as the outside is fully cooked as it is where the bacteria sits. mince is never fine pink
