Can we talk about circumcision?

I know this is part of our culture, but why do we do this? I never really thought about it before and always assumed I would just have it done for my sons. But now that I'm a mother to a boy I feel somehow about it. I don't want to put him through any unnecessary pain and I'm a bit worried something may go wrong 🥺 I spoke to my hubby about it for the first time last week and he said it's my choice but I'm unsure. On the one hand I'm not really pursuaded about hygiene reasons, on the other hand I don't want him to be made fun of when he's older. For mothers of sons, why did you circumcise? Or if there anyone who has not?

I circumcisied my boys mainly cos of my religion, I'm a Christian and it's biblical.

Same here!

I'm also Christian, and my understanding is that the New Testament makes it clear that circumcision is no longer required as that was part of the law abolished at the cross: "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love." - Galatians 5:6

Again, I'm not sure if you are the original poster, if you are and had all the facts then there was no need to come ask

Please check my first response. All the best 👍

I think you have misunderstood me sis. I am asking from a cultural basis, not a religious one. If my query was religious I would have posted on one of the Christian groups. I only shared those scriptures above as you mentioned it was biblical, but it isn't really. I posted here to get a cultural or even health perspective as I'm guessing this is open to all Nigerians, not just Christians. Thanks.

I had my son circumcised by a rabbi. Honestly I didn’t do any research I just did it cause it was the ‘done’ thing. All the males in my family are circumcised with no negative implications so I just went with it.

NHS supports it. Probably cause of the influence of the Jewish communities who also circumcise

Thanks for your response. I just looked it up on the NHS website now. I was surprised to find information there, as I attended a free online Antenatal class a few weeks ago and the midwife was so dismissive when someone asked her about circumcision, I just assumed the NHS didn't support it https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/circumcision-in-boys/ How old was your son when he was circumcised?

The complication rate with medical circumcision is 30%!!! It should be outlawed.

Here we go…..😂

Circumcision is healthy The foreskin expose them to all sort of infections and can make them sick I personally wouldn’t be with a guy that’s uncircumcised having to pull the skin back everytime When you can just remove it💀
