Baby formula

Morning, I have decided not to breast feed … so researching into formulas … how did you all decide what to use? Lots of different brands to choose from.

My boy has been on aptamil since the beginning. It is a little more pricey than the others but my boy has never had any problems so stuck with it and he’s flourishing ☺️ x

We use Cow and Gate, my little one got on just fine with it. Also found it to be slighter less expensive brand x

Avatar

We started with aptamil and moved onto cow and gate, they are made by the same manufacturer and the ingredient list is near enough identical. Although we don’t use the ready made liquid formula as I found my son was a lot more sicky with it.
There’s no need to buy any formula other than the first stage breast milk (for example toddler etc) good luck choosing ☺️

I think it’s wise going with whatever brand is readily available wherever you are as they’re all pretty similar despite clever marketing. First infant milk is highly regulated, etc x

Avatar

Formula is really highly regulated in the U.K., so any ingredient that has proven to be beneficial to babies legally has to be included in all formulas making them near identical. Some do add other ingredients which means that babies do have preference but it’s impossible to tell what will work well for your baby. I’d recommend going with a brand that is really easy to access for you and you might want to consider if they also do ready made bottles (some people don’t care for them some love them when out).

We went with whats readily available which was cow and gate but it didnt agree with him so we went with Aldi instead. (To be honest saved us so much money as they can get through a tin a week!)
They all have the same nutrition (they have to by law) so it just depends on what the baby likes really!

I tried cow & gate, made baby constipated. Tried cow & gate comfort milk, made him worse, swapped to HIPP organic after a few recommendations on here & he’s been absolutely fine since xx

Avatar

I combi fed and used aptamil and my little one was less sick on that then my boob! So now we just formula feed and we have never had any issues :)

Avatar

The composition of first formula is basically the same across all brands. The only real differences are between organic and non organic brands. We chose cow and gate simply because it was the cheapest

Avatar

Used cow and Gate with my first but he had nothing but issues with it so this time round we've gone for aptamil and our little girl is doing so well on it x

Avatar

Both my girls has sma and I shall be using that one again with this little girlie.

Avatar

We use kendamil he took to it straight away and had no problems at all x

Avatar

We use Aldi's as it where we do our weekly shop

Avatar

I think because they are regulated most formulas are very similar.

We used cow and gate and then moved on to aptimil.

Its worth mentioning that slowly they are all taking palm oil out of the formulas and this change didn't agree with my baby. We experienced this with cow and gate and he was so constipated, in pain a miserable for weeks. This is why we changed completely to aptimil.

The same update is now being phased with aptimil but luckily now he is moving to cows milk.

We initially chose cow and gate based on price. Aptimil is a bit kore expensive... that said I've heard many mums say aldis mamia formula is the same as aptimil just a lot cheaper and made the switch . Xx

Avatar

We took into consideration price and availability. We ended up using Aptimil but he has CMPA so was prescribed Aptimil Pepti

Avatar

I bought SMA to do combi feeding but I could only breast feed for 3days as I kept passing out (had a bit of a hard time after delivery so it was prob just that) but anyway I just bought it cz I’d heard of it and it’s been fine, think they’re all the same just try one and see how it goes xx

Avatar

We used Hipp Organic as I liked the fact it was organic and my LG has loved it. She’s just turned 1 so about to transition onto cows milk

Avatar

I decided to continue on what was given at the hospital since I didn’t originally plan to breastfeed, and she took to that the best! Even if I tried to change 🙃😂

Avatar

We decided on kendamil based on the rave reviews. It’s the only one made in the UK and baby has taken to it very well x

Avatar

We use Aldis as thats where we do our weekly shop and its saved us alot of money. We also havent had any problems with it

Avatar

We started straight on Aptimil. Ended up moving to Aptimil anti reflux then into Aptimil pepti due to CMPA . Aptimil was recommended to us. I would advise not to stock up on loads before the baby tries it. We got loads pre baby and realized we’re going to be screwed here if she doesn’t take to it, but luckily she did x

Avatar

I use aptamil, I always researched and for me personally found this was the closest to breast milk (not saying others aren’t I personally chose this out of choice) and I know others used this in the past hence my choice 😊

Avatar

A few drs/pharmacists mentioned to us that Aptamil is the closest to breastmilk.
Wether that's totally accurate I dont know... but my baby has breast milk and then aptamil in the evening and seems happy with it x

Avatar

The hospital fed my LO Similac ready feedand send us home with some. When we ran out we couldn't find the same kind, but tried a different ready feed by Similac which gave LO lots of gas. We switched to enfamil ready feed and that was good for a while untill I stopped pumping and it got too expensive so we switched to the enfamil powder.

There are a bunch to choose from, but you gotta do what's best for both you and your baby. It's like the bottles, you can research for weeks but at the end of the day, bub is who chooses the bottles and formula that works for them it seems. Lol

Avatar

I’ve used karicare.. it’s reasonable and it’s light on tummy.

Avatar

My little one was on sma pro at the hospital while I was trying to get into breastfeeding. After leaving the hospital I just carried on with it for the occasional bottle and when I changed from breastfeeding to formula I stuck with the same stuff. Since then we have changed over to sma little steps as we had to use that sometimes anyway when the shop didn’t have pro in. She was always and still is fine with both 😊 x

Avatar

We chose Similac Total Care 360 because it has 5 HMOs which are prebiotics identical to the ones found in breastmilk that are great for their immune systems and everything. That’s the most out of any formula, most formulas have 2. Now that he’s getting a little older and doesn’t need quite as much immune support, I think we’re switching to the Costco brand formula because I’ve read great things about it and it’s less expensive.

Avatar

We use the standard Aptamil, she seems pretty happy on it with no issues.
We use Aldis nappies which are stupid cheap so dont mind spending the extra on her food :-)

Avatar

There is a documentary on channel 4 called the great formula debate, it’s a dispatches thing! Give that a watch, it definitely helped me decide ☺️

Avatar

I just went fir cow n gate, they've been around a whole and I liked the packaging

Avatar

I went on price and availability at my local co-op! It's so tightly regulated that they're all nutritionally identical. Aptamil does a lot of marketing but has same ingredients as all the rest pretty much. The only reason to change it would be if baby has an upset tummy - there's no one perfect formula all babies will tolerate well as they do have different additional ingredients. So start with the cheapest and see how you get on!

Thank you all for your replies ! Has really helped me :)
