Moving to bmore from Southern California and am not sure how heavy of a coat I need for bmore winters. Do I need a long heavy down coat? Would a standard torso puffer work? 🤔 TIA for any advice!

a puffer is fine

The heaviest you can find it’s cold lol

See I’m getting like mixed comments from folks offline too 😹

It’s a mix since the weather fluctuates so much. We had a week of below 0 weather and it felt like -20 with windchill and now it’s 40s. Winter definitely gets freezing so a heavy parka and then a puffer for milder days.

My wife and I get 3 in 1 coats like this one: https://www.rei.com/product/158068/columbia-whirlibird-iv-interchange-3-in-1-jacket-womens
We look for water resistant outter shells, with puffers that zip into those shells as liners. We look for coats that cinch/Velcro/snap around the wrists and waist in order to prevent wind from going under. We both prefer hoods with cinches, too, but she likes hers removable.
We drive most places, walk our dog, & stroller through our neighborhood. I try to get a coat rated for around 15°F bc wind chill can take it a bit below this, but that's not often, and I can usually avoid going out on those days. On a rare day, it can go to single digits. I'd say avg is between 40 something and 20 something degrees. I hope this helps!

We like water proof boots, too! Our everyday ones cover our ankles (inkkas are my new fave) and allow us to wear darn tough medium weight socks. (We each own about 5 pairs of these bc they work well in fall and spring, too.) Our snow boots go mid calf or a bit higher, and can accommodate darn tough knee high heavy weight socks. (We each have 1-2 pairs of these.) I also get thermal pants to wear under my jeans for very cold dog walks, puppy playdates, shoveling out our car during snowstorms, walking to the store after a snow, or winter activities. Under armour is the go to, but I also like the champion doufold medium or heavy weight ones. Only one pair is needed. Friends love the feel of bamboo long johns, too.
2 pairs of gloves, one lighter and more flexible for driving etc, and one heavy for shoveling snow.
1-2 hats. 1 beanie-thickness, & 1 lined that covers your ears.
A scarf. I like pashminas bc cheap, pretty, warm, & long.
Genuinely, those items should serve you for 5-10 yrs each.
Welcome!!

I wear a regular north face jacket

Thanks everyone and all these details are SO helpful !! Thank you!!!

This is my second winter here and I still haven’t pulled out my winter coat 😂

I literally go out in a fleece or a hoodie and I’m fine. It’s really a mild winter. But since you are coming from SoCal I would be prepared to get a coat when you get here. Depends on when you are moving too by March the weather can be pretty mild and similar to San Fran temps.
