Has anyones’ baby experienced an allergic reaction after an oatmeal bath?

My baby’s 3 months old and has been experiencing eczema breakouts. Yesterday I wanted to try an oatmeal bath after reading a lot about it. Everything seemed fine after the bath no immediate breakouts so I feel like if it was the oats it would’ve been pretty immediate 🤔 but this morning is when I noticed more irritation and more bumps on his skin that looked like a pretty bad reaction. 🤦🏾‍♀️ I use a very safe detergent free of literally everything, but there is a small batch of clothes that was washed with the dreft detergent- I used it one time when he was born before my current detergent arrived and I wonder if that could also be it being that it’s been recalled. I rewashed most of the clothes I washed with dreft but perhaps I missed the sleeper he wore last night; it had a trace of the dreft smell lol. I’m scared to use the oats again. The first soap I ever used on him was made of oats and was EWG certified and he had a reaction when I used it on him the first time. I stopped using and tried it again 2 months later but only as a shampoo since it is both, and he broke out around his face. I was going to try the bath again this week just to make sure, oats are the culprit but I don’t want to even put my baby through that discomfort again🤦🏾‍♀️

The only thing we can do it controlled experiments untila they are old enough for solids. He me ibthink my son has a chicken and chicken by product sensitivity or allergy. Started during pregnancy everytime I would get sick it smelled funny to me making me nauseous etc. Now that he's here and ebf everytike I eat chicken or eggs and he nurses he throws up so I have cut it from my diet 90% because the other 10% I'm testing. Where I watch what I eat houw he is reacting etc. Then introduce dinner with chicken what for a day or two then maybe eggs a few days later. Cooked a variety of ways and cuts. Organics eggs both white and brown etc. Sometimes every few days sometimes every other week just depends on how bad the reaction and allowing his body to recover. Keep at it mama your doing the best you can to kind the culprit just be consistent

My little get similar bumps though sometimes around the neck back and chest area it could be due to drool rash or a variation of it or heat rash. Sometime 8f their saliva sits on them and dries and if soiled clothes is against their skin too long it can cause little bumps like this but definitely talk to your doctor and keep note of the changes

Yea, last night the heat in our building was so high it was 80° in the room. I woke up and opened the window just because I didn’t want it to irritate his skin. I just remembered that. Could be it too definitely. I did notice in the days where I have oatmeal for breakfast he gets very twisty and uncomfortable which I assume is gas since it’s full of fibers so I cut it from my diet for a couple weeks but I’ll go longer and see and reintroduce it 😮‍💨🤦🏾‍♀️ poor babies.

@Fati sending hugs mama you got this and there are some things recommended we stay away from as it could cause excess gas in bf babies. I like steel cut oats had some a few mornings ago they definitely made me gassy (mostly because I was trying a new brand but I also hadn't had any in a while so the fiber was doing it job lol) you can Google a few of this list to avoid and see if any have been in your rotation. And babies temperature definitely can fluctuate more than outs I live in a colder climate but our place gets really warm so often time he's only in a onesie and if he's sweating in that he's just in a diaper

My daughter is 4 months and she’s been having eczema he last couple weeks. Idk if you’re breastfeeding but I am and I think it was the eggs for me. I stopped eating eggs for like the last 4 days and it’s clearing up a little. If you’re breastfeeding it could be what you’re eating. Dairy, eggs and nuts are common allergies. But if you’re formula feeding it could be that too. It could be the detergent. I doubt it’s the oatmeal unless they’re adding other ingredients in it. Look on the bag. Or try rubbing a little bit of oatmeal on her skin and see if she gets a reaction.

It happened to my baby on the first month. I didn’t know what to do as I have never experienced it with my first baby. I have used Aveeno baby lotion eczema therapy one. It’s worked wonder on my baby. Hopefully, this will help you.

Yes baby skin looked just like that and I made it worse with the heat up after that
I just
Took to aquaphor body wash and most the time I just washed him up with water only I kept him moisturized with Vaseline or aquaphor it took like 2 weeks to clear..it was on his face as well

Avatar

yes I’m breastfeeding. Not heavy in dairy. Just cheeses which I stopped eating a while ago. With eggs I go off and on. It’s hard to pin point with that one. But I’ll try for a longer period of time. I’ll do an oatmeal patch test to see. But the detergent I use is clean also the Molly suds baby detergent

I hear mixed things about aquaphor. I use the Mustela sensitive skin soap and Shea butter. But now that you mention perfume, one of his uncles visited this week and I didn’t realize he had a scent on until I smelled it on baby after but would it take days to irritate baby’s skin? Especially after a bath?

Avatar

it could but other things could just add to the irritation to make it worse because that happened to my baby as well I let his aunt hold him and he smelled like perfume then I gave him a oatmeal bath then he woke up in hives a few days later and I literally use sensitive everything and I had mixed reviews about. Aquaphor too so I mostly use Vaseline on his skin honestly

Avatar

@Fati it possible for the irritation to be delayed. Think of it this was the cologne might have initially irritated his skin you gave him a bath which kept it from flaring up so bad visibility. Then you gave an Oatmeal bath which may or may not be causing irritation which could of stack irritation on top of another and then the heat later that night making more noticeable the following morning. I have to do the same thing with my little one I use a hypoallergenic soap and lotion. Keep the affected area clean, dry, and moisturized itll take a few days. Keep in mind if an irritant affects the area while healing it take a few extra days for each setback for lack of better term.

One last tip if you run hotter body wise and your lo often lays on your chest consider putting a receiving or muslin blanket between you. I run really hot I'm my husband walking heater he loves in the winter lol . But when the baby wants to only be on me all day or listen to my heart beat to calm down I have to make sure we clothed or used those if he's going to be laying on me for an extended time. That he's a little older I will take him off of me and readjust him to allow or bodies to cool but when just really need that connection I use the blankets if he wants to be glued lol

Thanks 🙏🏾 ladies. Its just so sad seeing him uncomfortable like that he barely slept last night. I have an aloe plant so I extracted the gel and put it on his body and that seemed to have given him some relief for awhile so I’ll try to give him a bath today or a sponge bath just to keep him clean. And try that again until I can see his ped Dr. I dont bathe him often bc of the ezcema and the dry cold weather here.

Avatar

yea that too. He’s usually in his sleeper and in me. Thanks for the tip 😊

@Fati trust me I get the cold weather dries us out so badly and does even worse for the babies so I get and just through trial and error am I am to figure out some possible solutions for my lo

Yeah girl it sucks! My first didn’t have eczema so this is new trying to figure out how to stop it without using any steroid creams the doctors prescribe. But for me I am using baby detergent so I don’t think it’s that. It’s been clearing up for my daughter slowly so I’m hoping it really is the eggs. Also maybe anything she is laying on, blankets pillows of those have been washed with regular it could be that too. Hope you/ we figure it out 🤞🏼

@Nami I never went for the baby detergent I just went for fragrance free and gentle detergents as I also have sensitive skin. Also some parents make the mistake of washing all the baby stuff in the baby detergent but still wash their stuff in strong detergent it was just easier to switch everyone detergent. Also I do miss the scents sometimes

Avatar

Yea that can definitely be a trigger I’ve always used fragrance free, but my husband did our last laundry (minus babys’) and they came back with a scent. 🤦🏾‍♀️ I didn’t even think about that!

Anyone use Dr Bronners soap for laundry or body and baby too?
