Verbal toddler suddenly speaking gibberish 🧐

My 2.5 year old is pretty advanced verbally, she speaks in full sentences constantly, but lately she’s started speaking in this fake “gibberish” language too. My husband and I try to ignore it but she’s doing it more and more (but not regressing in other speech.) She also repeats phrases a lot and likes “scripting” but can easily have a regular conversation too. Does anyone else’s kiddo do this? Is it just a phase? When I google it, I only find results about toddlers who are speech delayed which isn’t her. The other thing that comes up is autism or other neurodivergence which obv stresses me out a bit.

I used to babysit a 5 year old, and she would have those days, too. I’m not sure why

Mine is 2, so a bit younger, but I notice she will be so clear in her sentences and then go through a babbling phase, mostly while playing. She always comes out of it. It comes and goes. I would say it sounds normal to me. Don’t worry, she sounds like a bright little girl to me if she’s speaking in sentences. I know all too well the black hole of Google and all the WebMD diagnoses.

My son is doing this exact thing! He just turned 2 but since he was very young he’s had exceptional speech and vocabulary. Now all the sudden my husband and I look at each other like what the hell did he just say lol is he speaking English?! Then he switches right back into his usual basically full sentences. I’m suspecting it’s just a phase because he doesn’t show any other “red flags” for anything more serious. Nice to know other kids are doing this too lol

If she’s not missing milestones and is able to communicate just fine, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. That’s not to say that she is not neurodivergent, the autism spectrum is wide and filled with people that are very verbal and can communicate just fine. Kids also go through phases, they pick up funny habits. I would address the jibberish and say something like “I don’t speak that language or I don’t know what you’re saying”. But if those milestones are being met and she is healthy, I wouldn’t stress about it. Definitely contact your dr if you are really concerned.

Maybe she’s just being silly? Idk

Maybe wants a bit more attention? My cousin’s lo “fake cries” when she wants attention 😆

Phase! As long as she is still speaking the words she knows regularly i think its fine!

@Lacey thank you!! Those internet spirals can be so worrying!!

@Chelsea this is so helpful to hear it’s not just us!!

@Cici thank you!! She’s hitting all milestones so this is helpful. We do tell her that we can’t understand when she speaks her “fake words” but she thinks it’s funny ha

@Cire that could totally be it

@Christine could be! I feel like she gets a ton of attention but we always do want more don’t we! Haha

@Amellia thank you!!
