Pregnant and missing baths!

I love an extremely long bubble bath. The midwife has told me that I cannot have my scalding hot baths! I was also promised that I'd be warm during pregnancy but if anything, I'm colder than usual! I'm 17 weeks of that helps.

Anyone had any lukewarm baths? Anyone know of the maximum temperature recommended or heard anything different? I have heard of people enjoying hot tubs all throughout pregnancy so I'm thinking a hot bath (not scalding) shouldn't be a risk as my body is used to heat??

Any other bathing experience or advice would be helpful!

I’ve had baths all the way through mine as only thing that helps with pain, and midwives have never told me I couldn’t have one and I’m 38 +4! I always take a drink with me tho incase I get to hot 😂 xx

I’m nearly 34 weeks pregnant and I’ve had warm/hot baths throughout my whole pregnancy and the baby is doing absolutely fine! I definitely don’t have them as hot as I used to before becoming pregnant but they’ve helped with back pains and ache etc. I’d run yourself a bath and enjoy it just make sure you don’t overheat x

I had hot baths all the way through pregnancy. I just didn't stay in there too long and if I started feeling too hot I got out. It's more just about not letting yourself over heat. Xx

I took baths throughout, my baby is 3 months old this Friday and perfectly fine :)

Official advice is to not have the bath water over body temperature, so around 37/38 degrees. I’ve tried this and it’s horrible 😂 it’s way too cold, so every now and then when I want a bath I do go a few degrees over, but I always limit it to 10 minutes and make sure the bump is above water. Babies can overheat when our bodies are in hot water, and our bodies can cool down because our head is out of the water, but babies in the womb can’t cool down the same way.

Avatar

One thing to add: if your skin turns red the water is definitely too hot for baby, so I use that as an indicator too.

Avatar

I have had hot baths all the way through pregnancy despite the guidance, I just don’t over fill them so my bump and boobs and head are out of the water and the water isn’t hot enough to turn my skin red.

Avatar

If you google it, you can see the maximum temperature (100 degrees Fahrenheit). I then used a digital waterproof thermometer from amazon To make sure I wasn’t going over. If I was at the max, it was OK. Don’t get me wrong it’s not as hot as I would like, but still enjoyable.

Avatar

My baths are always extremely hot. Never caused me any issues whatsoever. I didn’t even know we shouldn’t have them.. I’m 34 weeks now xx

Avatar

Yeah to be honest, it’s probably fine. But stuff like saunas and hot tubs can be dangerous because the extreme temps are linked to birth defects. Although I’m sure anything in moderation is probably fine

Avatar

I went to iceland when I was 5 months pregnant and bathed in many natural hotspeinhs. My doctors said this was fine just not to go in a sauna

Avatar

I had hot baths in my last pregnancy, she’s 14 months and fine x

Avatar

I had baths, as long as its not scalding it's fine. Body temp water feels surprisingly hotter than you'd think. As my bump grew I used a lot of bubble bath so the bubbles could keep my bump warm 😂

Avatar

is correct. Max temperature for a bath is 100F. I got a cute rubber ducky thermometer of amazon. No hot tubs, no saunas, no steam rooms. You don’t want to raise your core body temperature. The risk with this is causing spina bifida in the baby. Risk is highest in 1st trimester and goes down the longer the pregnancy is, but best to avoid the whole time. Even doctors that are cool with deli meat and sushi don’t budge on a hot bath!

Avatar

I’m 13+5 and I’ve had baths all the way through just don’t have it to the point I’m overheating xx

Avatar

I have baths all the time! Don’t worry just don’t have them too hot! You don’t have to have them Luke warm just not hot hot. Keep very hydrated in there too I’m talking a pint of water before your bath and a pint whilst you’re in there. Xx

Avatar

I have a temperature duck. 38 is the maximum as raising core body temperature risks damage to the baby. That's the official guidance.

Avatar

It's said to avoid soaking in water that's hot enough to raise your body temperature higher than 102.2! I took got baths throughout my pregnancy and even one while in labor at the hospital just after your water breaks they do not advise you to take a bath

Avatar

I’ve been freezing in pregnancy so far - but I have heard this about lukewarm baths x

Avatar

I bathed every single day x

Depends a little on what you feel is nice and hot. The safe limit I was told for baths was 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is only a few degrees shy of my ideal non-pregnant bath temperature so for me not a huge deal. I also only tend to stay in for about 30-45 minutes at the most, and just add a little more water if needed. Highest risk to baby for most things developmentally is in first trimester, and the main concern is raising your core body temperature. I got a little floating thermometer so it could tell me how hot the water was as I filled the bath and if I added more water while I was in. Gave me peace of mind and I have continued to take baths when I want, being extremely mindful of any feeling of overheating or sweating. You could also try things to warm the air in the room so the water doesn’t need to feel as hot.

Avatar

The baby is generally fine the reason for not being anywhere too hot, saunas baths pools etc is because your body temp is different with baby inside so you may be affected differently to before your was pregnant(you could faint or dehydrate which then caused other issues for you and then baby if your body decided to shut down) but the lil bubs on the other had loves warmth and doesn’t over heat inside you as your body is smart enough to regulate inside…. Trust your body if you feel for a hot bath just make sure you have some cold water besides you.. or even a hydration drink that’s what I’ve done the whole way and my bump loves it ♥️

Avatar

I’ve had hot baths all the way through🤷🏻‍♀️ didn’t know you weren’t supposed too haha and I’m almost 34 weeks now! X

Avatar

I have hot baths! Im 33 weeks! As long as its not boiling its fine x

Avatar

I take warm baths, more hot than warm. Just pay attention to your body. If you’re sweating, your skin, is turning red, or you’re getting nauseous or lightheaded, get out

Avatar

Y’all - by the time you notice you’re hot - and sweating and everything else- your body temperature is already too hot for the baby

Avatar

I had hot baths my whole pregnancy, the water temperature declines in baths so they’re safe from what my doctors said. Avoid hot tubs where the temp stays super hot!

Avatar

Temp check it, my midwives said baths are fine. Don’t go over 100 degrees bath

Avatar

I had baths just not really really hot like I usually have them

Avatar

what products do you use in the bath? thanks!

Avatar

I still had hot baths when pregnant and even went into a hot spa 🤷🏼‍♀️ I didn’t stay in for too long though and had a cold shower straight after. I think you should be fine to enjoy hot baths as long as you don’t stay in too long 😊

Avatar

Karla, I have a 10wo who is healthy and happy and I took baths several times a day throughout and esp towards the end of my pregnancy. Our doula said you can run the bath at anything less than 105 degrees because it cools quickly. We had a rubber duck thermometer too. Honestly, 102 (which is the hard fast rule on how hot it should be once they’re taking baths on their own) felt hot enough and that’s where I typically tried to stay. If the water cooled off, I’d add a bit more hot water for comfort.

Be comfortable is my advice. Sometimes it’s more important for mom to feel relaxed and well than to worry about all of the rules. Trust your gut. If you’re worried it’s too hot, than it probably is.

Avatar

I’m missing my hot baths too 😭 I have a bath temp monitor for my LB ‘s baths so I’ve just been using that at 38oc. Definitely not as I like it but it’s been easing my pain

Avatar

Yes I took baths - what i consider normal temperature. It’s completely up to you what you choose to do and I always think when it’s your first baby you’re a bit more nervous about what to do. Midwives will provide advise and they’re very good at their jobs, but it’s advise only. You know best - you’re the mumma ☺️ xx

Avatar

You can absolutely have a hot bath, just not scalding. The reason being raising your internal temp for too long can be dangerous for the baby. That being said, you could probably even have the scalding bath as long as you kept it short.
The real heat danger comes with prolonged fevers or sitting in a hot tub for hours on end. I’ve also heard that it’s only first trimester that this is really a worry

Avatar

I take hot baths all the time🤣😬 I don’t know how to survive without

Avatar

Ice cold baths helped my nausea

Avatar

I’ve bathed all through my pregnancy in hot water not overally hot but certainly makes me pull my foot out again just can’t spend hours in there, think I’m in one 4 times a week for 30 mins x

Avatar

My doctor told me I can still take a hot bath, I’d normally cap it at 15 min and definitely go out if I start sweating that’s a definite sign it’s getting too hot for baby!

Avatar

I avoided baths until the third trimester and now i love a good bath at a roasting 37.5 degrees 😂 i was like you and loved a bath so hot my skin went pink pre pregnancy. I was also freezing all pregnancy until about 28 weeks and started hotting up and feeling congested

Avatar

I took hot baths 😅

Avatar

I’m stilling taking baths and I’m 18 weeks 😳😂

Avatar

Took a hot bath most nights while I was pregnant. Baby was born loving hot water lol

Avatar

I was told a hot bath was fine. Hot tubs are the issue because they stay hot, whereas your bath will naturally cool off. Also, I just bought a little kids thermometer that will float in the water and tell you the temp. I tried to keep it around 102 or less and now do the same and use it for baby.

Avatar

It's not about anything other than the fact that you can get too hot and over heat and possibly faint or pass out and you know what can happen if that occurs. I love hot baths and once I felt like i almost died. Thankful i made it out of that bathroom in one piece. I wouldn't want anyone to go through that feeling tbh. Scariest thing I've experienced body wise so far.

Avatar

I’m 17 weeks and have had a bath every single day lol.

Avatar

I literally live in the bath atm at 34 weeks! Xx

Avatar

I feel the exact same! I have read that the temp shouldn’t be over 37 Celsius as it’s about your body temp rising. I’ve had these 37 degree baths and I feel like it’s a bowl of cold water!! Haha xx

Avatar

I love a hot bath and have not changed the temperature since being pregnant I am now 33 weeks and had no side effects I just make sure the bathroom is ventilated so I don’t get dizzy!

Avatar

I’m having a bath almost every day and anything below 40C is too cold for me.. I did this in my first pregnancy and gave birth naturally and baby was fine.
Just do what feels right x
