Guinea pigs or other rodents while pregnant?!

Is it safe to handle Guinea pigs ? I might be pregnant, well at least we are trying. And at the same time I wanted to get Guinea pig a while back and it is happening. But then I was reading all kinds of scary stuff on the internet. So how is it in real life ? Anyone has rabbits/rats/Guinea pigs while pregnant despite the danger?
