Dogs and babies

So our two year old dog sleeps soundly in our bed every night, now we have a baby on the way I am wondering if this is still going to be doable? The baby will be next to the bed in their own cot, but obviously will be up a lot in the night, is it safe to have a dog asleep in the bed / in the room? What’s general advice / experience around this? Thank you!

Our dog is the same. Personally I will be separating them around sleeping or when I might not be awake to supervise - she’s a super loving dog, but I’m worried that all that love could lead her to sit on or smother the baby accidentally

I have a 6 year old lab, my son is 2, my dog has always slept in my bedroom and did when I bought my son home and still does now (my son is now in his own room). I decided to continue letting him sleep in my bedroom as bringing a baby home is a huge deal, and for pets it’s a total upheaval for them so I didn’t want to upset him more or for him to become jealous. My son & dog are the best of friends and I truly believe it’s because I kept his routine, and taught my son to respect the dog. When I wake on a morning to get my son he looks for the dog and the two of them spend their morning together (supervised) and love it xx just do what is best For you xx

@Kimberley thank you so much - I love this and it completely resonates with me. I think I will be taking the same approach, our dog is very calm and I would hate to change her routine when she is so perfectly well behaved and like you said all about teaching a respectful relationship. Really helpful much appreciated x

Our sweet pug sleeps on our bed. She sleeps in between us and the baby will be in the next to me cribb next to me so would have to wake me up in order to get to the baby. We might be able to get her initially to sleep downstairs but through the night she will come upstairs and the last thing we need is more disruption in the night. Also she’s my baby too and want her to be happy. If it doesn’t work she can be put in her crate in the same room but I know she won’t like it. I like the idea of a cat net might try that

I was worried about my cockapoo as he sleeps in our bed/room but he was fine. We did separate him and make him sleep in the hallway for a couple of weeks, but after a while we just let him in and he just slept and wasn’t bothered by baby xxx

Thanks all that’s really helpful!

I have two chihuahuas who sleep in our bed. We toyed with if we’re gonna have them sleep downstairs but honestly they’re so small and the bedside crib has sides up so we’ve decided we’re gonna try without disturbing where they sleep! Obviously will just assess as we go but I think it’s down to the individual dog and size also
