Cloth Diapers

Does anyone use cloth diapers? Is it worth it? We didn’t with our first (he’s 14 months currently) but we are really thinking about using it with our second and also switching to using them with our first.

Yes yes and yes. I used them I would recommend them and it's never too late especially if you're going to go again with the next kid. I would recommend doing a diaper raffle at your baby sprinkle or baby shower that way you can get most of them for free. And then it's all about establishing a good wash cycle.

How many do you recommend that we need for each child?

It depends on how often you want to do laundry. Ideally you shouldn't go more than 3 to 4 days and you're going to need enough for each child 5-6 per child per day. I did disposables at night. The one diaper was worth it compared to leaks.

I think it’s worth it if you will use them going forward. It’s a little more work in cleaning them but I loved it. Looking forward to using them with the my second. I think there are lots of benefits to using them!

I have 6. They're so expensive so I only have what was on my registry. We usually do disposable unless we're running low we'll use cloth. I would like to do more cloth diapering but I need a wet bag. That's literally all thats keeping me from using them more

I have around 30-35 with a 3 day wash cycle and it’s fantastic we love it so much! End up saving up to AU5k

Amazing I would get the BIRTH TO POTTY (type in BTP reusable nappy). Because then you can just get like 30 or so and use them for both children. You can adjust the sizes and never need to buy more unless you want more in circulation.

You can get the birth to potty size now for your first, and learn your routine with washing ect, then when baby comes you can add to it. I have 25 that adjust size so I can use them for new baby when he arrives too. Its saved me so much money. I'm UK based, so price wise, pampers cost £6 for approx 40 disposable, it cost me £15 for 6 shells and 12 liners, which have been used for over 2 years now!! We're now potty training and using the shells without liners as pants as they're still waterproof!

yes you can buy a 6 pack on amazon for 35 they are just as good as the expensive ones. washing them takes more effort than using disposables but they are healthier for the baby and will save you a lot of money, if you have a washing machine it is much easier and don't forget to buy liners, that makes things much easier.

I have three shells (outside layer of the two part nappies) they have gotten me through the majority of the first three months. I tend to use one disposable at night just because they keep her drier and she sleeps better? Or at least initially, I think they wet less in the night as they go on. A bunch of muslin squares that we fold ourselves and some absorbant liners? Probably invested maybe £100 and that included a couple packs of reusable wipes.. about to switch to the larger size (I started with the newborn that were supposed to last until 6 mo, but we have chunky thighs) so another £30-50 on new shells and can continue using the same inserts until potty trained. Bambino mio is what we use and cheeky wipes.

@Taylor how often do you change the cloth diaper? I feel like even when I do it every hour she's sitting it wet/dirty for a bit (baby is 9 weeks). Also, how does your outer stay dry? I find they are both always wet so I have to put on a new outer with a new liner. Baby was getting a rash from sitting in wetness too long (I think) so started washing her in the sink at every diaper change at home (rather than cloth or regular wipes) and wearing disposable at night.

Yes, I love my Esembly diapers! So worth it!!

@Erica it’s gotten better each week, or I’m getting the rhythm better? I probably change her every 3 hours if I time it right? There was a phase where every time i changed her she was wet again immediately but blaming that on FTM learning curve.. those muslin cloths are outrageously absorbant, and if I throw the right moisture wicking liner in there’s no more moisture on her than the disposables. And no rashes with them. I haven’t found the outer bit too wet, but if it is I’ll just lay it out to dry for the next change. When I’m lazy I just throw a few liners in and forget the muslin, but it’s definitely more damp then. I usually end up with two in the wash, one on, only disasters are multiple poos which makes timing harder. Maybe I get four shells next time.. 😅

@Jade thank you! I’ll look into those! I was just gifted a lambswool cover and it does make me feel like the natural fibres are best!

@Jade where would you get hemp and bamboo inserts? And you'd recommend?

@Taylor thanks for the additional details! When you say muslin cloths...what do you mean exactly? What do you use? And what would you say is the right moisture wicking liner? Thank you!!

We LOVE Hippybottomus. We tried Bare & Boho and hated them in comparison, as they leaked each time and took ages to dry after washing

We’ve used them for 10 years now and 3 kids. My last 2 are 22m and 3.5.
