Colchester hospital maternity unit

Hello, I am wondering about people's individual experience of birth and care at the maternity unit in Colchester hospital? Fingers crossed, I will be able to give birth at St Peters in Maldon, but as an alternative, I have not heard amazing things about Broomfield and am hoping your experiences at Colchester may be a little better. Thanks!

I’m in broomfield at the moment and can agree. I’ve been left 4 days to be induced x

I have given birth twice at Colchester and will be 3rd time in September, they are amazing and can’t fault them, I was induced with my first and check regularly till I needed to be taken to birthing unit, 2nd I had a water birth and lost a lot of blood and the after care was amazing and this time because of the blood loss they are monitoring me regularly and have put a plan in place for when I arrive.

I gave birth at Colchester Hospital and I could not fault the care provided. In my experience I was induced on the Wednesday afternoon and my baby was born Thursday morning. The midwife’s were very attentive and being a first time mum they were very understanding and helpful. Obviously this is just my experience and everyone is different but 10/10 would recommend Colchester hospital based on my birth experience!! X

I had a really good experience with them, the care I received from the midwives was great. I will say though that I had a very long wait to be induced (was on ward for 5 days waiting for a bed in the delivery suite) because it was so busy, so if induction does come up I'd make sure they're completely transparent with you about timescales

Very good care at Colchester x

Really good experience, I gave birth in January and couldn’t fault a single aspect even though they were very busy at the time

Was amazing from start to finish. I have a water birth :) Highly recommend x

I had a really good experience at Colchester. Had always planned on having my baby at Clacton but they were full so was a bit worried when they said I had to go there but it facilities are all new and the staff were so lovely. I was hoping to have a water birth and was in the pool probably 2 hours after arriving at the hospital, ended up having to have forceps but the midwives made me feel so safe and comfortable the whole time. I had to stay in for two days afterwards and again the staff on the ward looked after us so well, really helped me establish breastfeeding as well which I’ll be forever grateful for. Good luck with your birth x

I had good care at Colchester hospital, when my waters broke they said I could go home as I was only two cm but when it got worse I went back and they took me straight to labour ward. I was the only one in there at the time so I chose to try a water north but I kept cramping up. I had a midwife and a student midwife they bought us (me and my birthing partner) food around lunchtime and I was allowed to eat it when I woke up (kept passing out from exhaustion as I only got one hour sleep before labour) but it was a good experience I was the midwife’s priority the whole time I was in there would often be left with the student midwife if the main one had to leave the room for something but overall when I’d finally given birth I was able to hold the baby whilst they assessed damage that had been done to me during birth and they helped me up and stitched me up afterwards whilst my birthing partner got to feed the baby :)

Broomfield are currently being sued by me and my husband

I had all 3 of my babies at Colchester, my eldest is 7 now, youngest is 10 weeks. Each experience was positive. My first was a water birth which was brilliant. The staff are great and I felt I was listened to. My 3rd wasn't breathing when he was born and they were flipping fast acting. I stayed overnight and we were both looked after very well. I also had to go back a week after having my 3rd and they were great

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. It's great to hear such positive experiences with Colchester 🥰

I had my first in Colchester and the whole team were amazing given the circumstances x
