Very serious inquiry. Can I smoke while pregnant?

I smoked for anxiety occasionally prior to pregnancy and currently I haven't been able to take my usual prescribed meds (antidepressants, anti anxiety meds, adderall) due to the pregnancy but I sincerely feel like I'm at my limit with everything. I checked myself into the asylum for a 24hr hold this week and I'm struggling with everything but I don't want to hurt my baby. I'm 16 weeks and I'm worried but I don't know what else to do.

TLDR; I have severe cptsd, depression and anxiety (prior to pregnancy even) with prescribed medication that is not safe for pregnancy. Would smoking at 16 weeks be the worst even if it's only a hit or 2? I've never struggled with addiction to any drugs or alcohol. I just know weed will keep me calm.
I do currently have 2 therapists and a psychiatrist.

While smoking isn’t advised during pregnancy for many reasons which I’m sure you’re aware of already. Mum being stressed and mentally unwell is also not good for baby. You have to do what you can to stay sane especially with the added difficulty of being pregnant. Just make sure you’re aware of the risks - weigh up the pros and cons for yourself (different for everyone) and go from there 🩷

My pediatrician wouldn't let me have bologna I don't think they'll green light a blunt. But it may be time for therapy or an anti anxiety medication that's been tested on pregnancy

Always check with your healthcare professional. I've known people to heavily smoke their whole pregnancy and their baby was fine. Does that mean it'll be the same for you? No, that's why it's always best to ask the people who know what they're talking about.

I think it depends on where you are

I smoked a couple of times during my early pregnancy and a little bit towards my 3rd trimester. I also exclusively breastfeed and i may be judged for this but i smoke while breastfeeding. It doesn’t seem to affect my baby but either way she is perfectly healthy . Everybody’s experience is different, i’m not saying it’s okay just because my baby is fine but just giving my experience

I’ve read that it’s not advised but I understand how your feeling I struggled during pregnancy with soo much anxiety, I just wanted anything to calm me down. At times I felt like I was losing it, I remember breaking down so much, what helped me was talking to someone and even that didn’t make any of the feelings less intense. Maybe you could speak to a therapist? Or someone?
It does get better because remember alongside whatever mental struggles you’re going through are the pregnancy hormones and this big huge change happening to your body, which us sooo overwhelming.
Keep yourself surrounded by people who can support you, talk to a therapist and see how they can help, and take it one day at a time. I hope you find some ease and calmness during this time.

I knew someone who did smoke during pregnancy. She talked it over with her doctors noone said to not. She suffered sever anxiety depression and ptsd. But what they dont tell you is the baby will be drug tested when delivered and if baby has anything in there system you will be subject to an investigation and possibly worse. Good luck with everything, i wish for the best for you.

Please do your child a favor and don’t smoke during pregnancy

Avatar

not meaning to sound judgey at all. I'm genuinely curious. Did you disclose this to your midwife, health nurses etc? Do they report you to child protection and stuff?

Avatar

no i didn’t i just did some research and asked people who have done it before. No they do not report me to cps because they did not drug test me or my baby. They would only do that if they know you have a history of drug use or if they know that you are smoking. That’s why i didn’t ask my obgyn, i didn’t want to risk being tested

Avatar

Girl I smoked my whole pregnancy I don't think there's anything wrong with it and my babys very healthy and had no health issues but because it is illegal in my state I did get a visit from cps but they threw out the case once they did a house visit

Avatar

that's fair enough my friend got drug tested but they knew she did it

I've smoked w all my pregnancies and they're all above average! The only issue I can see is if you get tested at delivery! Whatever you do don't admit to use

Listen to your own body! Healthy mom and 5mo bby boy here, praise God! Earth herb wasn’t a problem.

No judgement against smoking marijuana this early in pregnancy… BUT - something to consider - marijuana is more of a bandaid than an actual solution.

Long term, for the remainder of pregnancy, you may want to seek out a more constant/on going therapy and maybe find some techniques that could help your anxiety.

Mental health is rough - and even more so during pregnancy when you have so many hormones going though you.

This anxiety your getting is completely normal! Especially coming off of different medications all at once.

I have found that routine helps greatly along with incorporating a few relaxing activities such as (for me) reading, crafts etc. anything to keep my mind active and not thinking of what makes me anxious

Every body has different needs

The issue with it is that it can affect brain development so you might not know if there's been any effect on baby until they're at school or not meeting milestones as expected. As with everything, not everybody will be affected so you will always find someone who says "I smoked/drank/did crack (insert not recommended substance here) all the way through all my pregnancies and my kids are fine" but A. Their definition of fine might be different and B. They might have been lucky.
There are several antidepressants and anti anxiety medications that can be used safely in pregnancy. If none of then are suitable for you and you're willing to risk it, edibles are probably better than smoking. Xx

I like the way your name is spelled haha but any doctor will tell you know so I’m sure it’s not worth even asking.

yes I agree i smoked here and there when I was so nauseous I couldn’t eat I was losing weight instead of gaining it from vomiting so much all the mental stuff didn’t hit me until after pregnancy so im sure it’s even harder during pregnancy while your body is giving everything you need to your baby. But I will tell you every time I did it I felt soooo guilty because there is just no way of knowing if your baby will be okay or not. So you really just have to think if it’s worth it. Im sure they do have medicine for women that are pregnant and if those don’t work for you I would turn to nature and god those have always proved to help people with anxiety and stuff like that it’s so peaceful and relaxing. Take a book and some snacks and go sit on the beach breath the air in invite friends or family. I get you gotta do what you gotta do but I would try and figure it out long term like she said!! I hope you find what works for you and congratulations on the baby!!

I'm in 2nd trimester and haven't stopped smoking every day. I literally can't eat or stomach food without it. And I could before I was pregnant! Apparently it's normal up until 14/16 weeks to struggle with food. I'm just hoping it gets easier cause I actually don't want to smoke every day as it turns into a dependency !

Avatar

Imo. Absolutely. No issues with it. I had hyperemesis and my body was rejecting liquids and all foods. It's the only thing that saved me. And I was on meds to help cancer patients eat with it not working. Same with breastfeeding, no issues during or afterward. Incredibly smart children. I think people just didn't know because there was little research. It helped tremendously with anxiety but it depends on you, really. How your body reacts while anxious. Take it slow.

I have horrible ptsd, anxiety and depression. I was on effexor for about 5 years prior to getting pregnant. After a month or two it was hard for me to take my effexor because of the morning sickness. I have not stopped smoking since. I smoke out of a bong and use a vape. I have not been taking my meds since. Smoking helps me so much. I have told my Doctors and they are okay with it. I will be having non stress test the last 2 months of pregnancy but I would have to if I was on my medication. I am 24 weeks now and baby is moving like crazy. I have done so much research and talked to sooo many ladies on here that have had nothing but positive thing about their babies.

Avatar

My doctors also told me that as a mom you have to be healthy and not an anxious mess. You have to do what's best for you.

Avatar

where is your proof?. No studies to indicate that is an evidence-based claim. Firstly, because it's not legal for us to study in a research setting because it is categorized as a schedule 1 drug. I've known many many women to smoke during pregnancy, including myself, having four children and no absolutely it does not affect brain development. If you have evidence of that, I'd like to see it .I have four incredibly incredibly smart kids. I'm not condoning any kind of narcotics. My opinion pot is not a narcotic. It should be in a category all of itself. And yes other drugs can cause developmental disabilities, postnatal withdrawal, and other horrific conditions. But with cannabis preg women are able to eat again without vomiting and that's crucial to development of the baby

Avatar

Maternal mental health is vital and, if cannabis is the only thing that works for the OP, then that's what she needs. But she was also worried about potential effects on her baby, which is what I was sharing. The intent was not to upset anyone. And small amounts used are unlikely to cause any issues.
