Hi everyone, I am due end of November and HR just reached out and want me to sign to be an independent contractor and to convert from full time employe (40 hrs per week) to be maximum (10 hrs per week). I asked the HR that is there a reason I didn't get a clear answer 'he didn't say that I am about to apply for maternity/medical leave' also I have no access now to my work email and I even can't login in to my work laptop any advise what should I do in this situation!!!

That sounds illegal as hell. I would contact HR and let them know you are not consenting to that and if they pursue it you will be contacting a lawyer.

How long after you informed them of your pregnancy did this happen? And, did they do this to anyone else?

I don't think they can randomly shorten your hours after you communicated the maternity leave

Something doesn't seem right. Are you entitled to martenity leave with your current status of hours and position?
Why change that and risk your benefits if so

they offered me a full time job on September 8th because I was part time employee and I informed them that I am pregnant June 14th, but I informed the HR that I will be applying for maternity leave and after I received a call that they want to cut my hours to maximum 10 hrs per week and to be independent contractor instead of full time employee and forced me to sign and when i refused they disabled my work email and even my worklaptop I cannot access

yes I am confused too don't know after converting me from part-time to full-time they want to cut my hours to maximum 10 hrs per week and be an independent contractor

yes I am in massachusetts and looking for a labor lawyer for consultation

I didn't sign the independent contractor that limit my hours to maximum 10 hrs per week so they disabled my work email I can't access it anymore and I can't access my work laptop as well can't login

@Walaa I would contact a lawyer and set up a consultation with them. From there let the lawyer handle it. Your HR department just screwed themselves.

I agree I am currently looking for a labor lawyer in massachusetts

I wish you the best of luck! I'm sorry you're having to deal with this!

I went just went through something like this, except they laid me off, through TEXT! I'm currently reporting them to EEOC

yes I just saw EEOC site and I am going to report them too, did you receive any response from EEOC yet?

no, they are fully booked until December for me to talk to someone 🥴 so I check back to see if anyone had canceled to be able to get an appointment

gotcha hopefully you will be able to get hold of someone soon! So do you think employers do that just right before our medical/maternity leave so they don't have to pay the increased rate for maternity leave? As I am due in mid of November and they want now to cut my hours from full time to a maximum 10 hrs per week as an independent contractor!

maybe, but this job was treating me differently from the beginning

Yeah that’s definitely illegal under the new law that took effect this year. You need to speak to an employment attorney.
