Cows milk protein allergy

Hey lovely can I ask what the signs were I know you have mentioned sleepless nights. Did your little one get a rash or have any stringy poop?
My little girl can be quite unsettled and has had a rash on and off on face and body and stringy poop today. She is EBF at the mo and I have been thinking she has had reflux as her brother had it but also wondering whether it could be CMPA from reading about the symptoms.
How did you manage to get a diagnosis xx

Heyy! It started when he was a week old, he was being sick after every feed and bringing up milk for 2+ hours afterwards until he was due his next feed, so it was a continuous cycle. At 2 weeks he started to bring his knees up and roll about his next to me, red in the face and screaming so we took him to the gp who then told us to go to A&E, it was there when they diagnosed him with reflux and prescribed him omeprazole. I knew there was always something else to it though as he would get a rash on his face after a feed that would disappear after an hour, gagging, coughing, sneezing and blocked nose. I googled the symptoms and it came up with cows milk allergy. He had a review appointment for his reflux this morning so I just told the gp i thought it was an allergy and listed all the symptoms and she agreed xx

Hi lovely! My LO is on trial for a diagnosis of CMPA. You cannot use the prep machine to make any prescribed milk, i found this out the hard way. You have to make it with fully boiler water as the milk powder and water don’t combine together if not xx

My first had cmpa and my second has been diagnosed too, both of mine have been on neocate, first was on nutramigen first, when making the milk I use the prep machine and put both shot of water into the bottle (hot and cold) and then add the powder at the end, shake and serve, when out you can add just the cool water shot from the prep to your bottles and then when out just top it up with boiled water and then add the milk, you don't add the boiled water first because it kills the probiotics that are in the milk (its not like standard milk) it's worked fine for both mine and I got the information off main group cmpa support on Facebook someone had contacted the manufacturers of the milks and asked them, hope this helps xx

i make the bottle up about 45 minutes before my LG is due a feed with boiling water she’s currently on 4oz. It has to be boiling to kill any bacteria present in the formula. There’s a lot of mixed reviews on whether the prep machine works because there’s many different ‘alternative’ prescribed milks. My LG is on SMA Althera xx

Someone told me you can use the prep machine but put all the water in the bottle then add the formula. I haven’t done this yet though because my prep machine hasn’t been working in this heat!

My little one was diagnosed on Friday and I’ve been using prescription milk 🤞🏽

My little one is on Aptamil Pepti 1 and carabel for reflux ,I use bottle water and get it warm in the microwave then add the formula to it ,some relatives told me this is the way they’ve done it with they’re little one who also has CMA… and now I’m so confused,have I done it wrong the whole time?😳😫

I’m reluctant to use the prep I’ve heard so many people say even the hot and cold water first ruins the formula 😩 I’ve filled a couple of bottles with boiling water and letting them cool to room temp, then adding the formula when needed. What prescription milk is your little one on? Mines been prescribed nutramigen x

the group is really useful especially when it comes to weaning, nutramigen is the same as neocate in the way it is made, however you choose to make it its just advised you don't do it with boiling water either let the water cool first or use the prep both shots of water then formula, prescription milk is really thin so thickeners can really help both my boys have been on gaviscon which works as a thickener too, just be careful with carobel because it contains soya which lots of cmpa babies are also allergic to if they don't agree with it another one to try is called magic mix x

It is really confusing, personally i am continuing to make it with completely boiled water and when its hot as with any formula its the heat that kills the bacteria xx

It's really confusing and each formula is different and depends on if your using hydrolysed formula or ameno acid one, I would join the Facebook group and search any questions in the search bar on the group you will find the answers to most of your questions regarding cmpa x

it’s because the prescription milk is very light,also happened to us .Get the carabel and a nr 2 teat as you’ll need a better flow,took 2 weeks for the carabel to work for us ,first runny stools then constipation but the reflux definitely improved,also put the mattress of the cot at 30 degrees?keep him upright for feeding and 30 min upright after feed ,we’ve been in and out hospital couple of times,he’s 5 weeks now and getting better,so keep trying I definitely understand you ❤️

With my first 7 years ago he was given sma wysoy milk for his cows milk allergy and was fine to use with the prep machine, did mix with a spoon as was thicker to stop it sticking as much.
Though this time around my little one(5 weeks) doesn't have a cows mill allergy but everytime use prep machine he has really soft nappies(in middle of feeds compared to normal)

that’s the one mines on. We are trialling for 2 weeks. It still has a milk element in it so if baby is severely allergic it won’t work so I’m hoping he isn’t x

we ended up in hospital again last night as he had very runny poos after every feed and screaming in pain for an hour after. But they said it’s just a side effect of the Nutramigen 😭 we’ve been keeping him up for 30 minutes after feeding but we tilted his mattress last night and definitely helped with the sickness! Thanks so much for your advice! Xxx

im hoping he isn’t too! It’s so hard seeing him like this isn’t it! I picked it Carobel yesterday and going to start using it today, do you add the Carobel with the boiling water or add it at the same time as Nutramigen? And how many scoops are you using? Sorry for all the questions 🫣 xx

don’t make nutramigen in boiling water it takes out all the good nutrients. Only cool boiled water (I guess warm would be fine too but mine will drink anything haha)

My bub drinks 180ml each feed so I add 1 scoop to make the ‘thin’ consistency which you add after you have prepared the milk. Shake for 30 secs then leave for a few mins to thicken then shake again.

It’s confusing not sure how much your little one drinks but the chart on the back of the carobel box tells you, if you’re confused let me know I’ll help you work it out haha.

Definitely try the think consistency first and see how you get on xx

I’ve been filling around 6 bottles with boiling water and leaving them to the side to cool then adding the formula when needed. The first two bottles though I was making them with the hot shot in the prep machine until I was told not to 🫣
Mine will drink anything too, so lucky!
He’s drinking 120ml each feed at the moment, the back of the box is so confusing I’m just sat staring at it haha! Xx

I’d luckily not used my prep machine because it wouldn’t let me when we had the really hot weather lol so resorted to putting the water in bottles! Im glad you haven’t used boiling water haha cos I did at the start😅🤦🏽‍♀️.

So for the thin consistency it’s 1/2 a scoop per 90ml, so for me cos he’s on 180ml I could do 1 whole one. I would try maybe like 3/4 of the scoop? It won’t harm him it’ll just make it thicker if anything.

Try it for a few days see if it helps if not for the thick consistency it’ll be 1 scoop per 60ml so for you that’s 2 scoops xx

well we tried the Carobel and it won’t come through his size 1 teats so we’re back out today to buy size 2! Poor baba was sucking away for ages and nothing was coming out 🫣🙄 we’ll try again later 😂 xx

oh gosh yeah I forgot to mention that! We had to buy size 2 aswell🤦🏽‍♀️ but he guzzles too fast so we have regular breaks inbetween so he can catch his breath🤣 xx
