Vernix/smegma

Noticed tonight that my little girl still has fairly thick white vernix/smegma each side of her labia. Are we meant to thoroughly clean it off or leave it to come away naturally? Midwives said not to part and clean her but I had to as she had a runny poop so I needed to clear it all.
