I wish I could afford a midwife

are you sure you can't? Or do you not have insurance? Some insurance completely covers it, or like ours covered half, and then we used FSA money, so after all that it cost us about $2k, but we did pay $5k upfront. Some people it gets completely covered but I think they have a lot of phone calls with insurance to get exemptions and things.
