2 year old struggling at nursery

My 2 year old son (3 in December) started nursery a few weeks ago and has been struggling to settle in at nursery as he doesn’t like toys that aren’t what he’s used to or anything craft/sensory related so I’m having to take 2 of the toys he plays with at home to nursery when I drop him off. At the moment he’s there for 3 hours and his key worker doesn’t think he’s ready for lunch there as it’s not part of his nursery routine yet and when he is there he apparently doesn’t do much apart from sit down and play with his fidget popper then walk in and out the room. Eventually I want to put him in nursery for 5 hours a day and go back to working again but feel like him settling in could potentially hinder that as he’s already quite behind for where he should be for his age and not being there for lunch or in a nursery environment for longer I feel will hinder his development even further Has anyone else been through this and have you been able to leave your son/daughter there longer than 3 hours? My son doesn’t say much at the moment so can’t always communicate his needs and wants and is also on the waiting list for paediatrics and speech therapy Grateful for any tips or advice😊

Do they use makaton so that he can communicate what they want. If you belong to any local sen fb groups it might be worth getting some recommendations of nurseries that are good with sen. My oldest didn’t do part time at nursery although it was more difficult as he got older. Have they indicated how long it might take? If you do claim dla it might be worth getting private salt. Waiting lists might be better now but it was an 18 month waiting list at one point. My daughter (although covid didn’t help) was seen the month before she started reception (Suffolk).

@Karen I don’t think so but I haven’t asked. I’ve never done makaton with him as I’ve never been able to get him to stay still long enough to do that sort of stuff. The nursery he’s at does have experience with SEN children which is why I picked the specific one. No they haven’t yet and they always seem quite busy so I don’t want to take up too much of their time. I got told 8 months to a year for paediatrics but speech therapy is apparently quicker. I don’t claim it yet no as I’ve not been told to apply for it as he’s not been diagnosed with anything even though he’s showing signs he could be autistic as I’ve been previously diagnosed with it. We’re in Suffolk as well

Ask about PECS. Its pictures so he can choose what he wants needs. and can use them as Now next then.. like routine so he then gets to know whats coming ie now is whatever activity then snack then another activity or bathroom and you can encourage speech by using these too.. and DLA doesnt go based on diagnosis its about care needs- is there anything that he gets extra or needs more care than a child his age? but more evidence eg SALT/pediatrician letters.

@Linzi I think they suggested something like this today when I picked him up. I’ve tried to do it previously but haven’t been able to get him to engage with it. I normally try to do the same things at the same time everyday so he has a rough idea of what happens and when and he seems to be understanding that part of things just doesn’t like it when we do something out of routine. At the moment I can’t leave him at nursery for longer than 3 hours as they don’t think he’ll cope for longer and I can’t take him to a lot of groups on in the area as they’d be too busy or overwhelming for him and he wouldn’t like it but apart from that I don’t think so no. I have both of those letters

My little girl is 2, she has speech delay & has suspected ASD, she has been going to nursery for around 4 weeks now. Next week is her 5th week & she will be staying for lunch. She's had a slow transition meaning she's coped much better rather than not coping at all. Before this she only done 2hrs for 2 mornings a week. It's paid off though, has he been referred to SALT etc? Hang in there girl ❤️

@Kimberley I’m in the same scenario as you as my son is also speech delayed and possibly ASD. My son did as well as I had to stay there with him for his first 3 days there and I was worrying he wouldn’t settle in but he seems to be coping better than expected without me there now. I booked him in 3 hours 3 days a week at the moment hoping to increase it over time but we’ll see. Yeah he’s been referred for that as well as paediatrics
