Maternity pay or just benefits?

Hiya everyone! I’m a bit stuck on what would be financially best for us as a family… I really don’t want to return to my work as my manager is horrible and whilst taking the maternity pay I’d have to go back to pay it back… My partner isn’t working as he has mental health disabilities and is currently being reassessed bless him❤️ so he can’t work, We were thinking would it be better I also leave my job, we claim Universal credit, whatever benefits we get for the baby and then I get Carer’s allowance and PIP for my partner? What would you ladies recommend? This is just for the first year of baby then we’d go back to work! X

Why would you have to go back to pay maternity pay back?? Unless it’s enhanced maternity pay you’re you don’t pay it back. SMP will work out better than solo benefits & you can claim benefits & get SMP (they’re deducted 55p for every £1). If you’re on MA, you still don’t need to go back to pay it back & you can also claim benefits but it’s taken £1 from every £1 because it’s unearned income. Can’t comment on the carers allowance & PIP but I don’t believe it’s that much & if it’s being reassessed then you’re chancing it

@Tanya I get enhanced May pay from the NHS, but my work haven’t processed it yet and I start my maternity leave in 4 days😅 so it says I have to go back… plus we’re moving area for a 2 bedroom place! Thank you though lovely, Carers allowance takes away road tax and also pays £300+ monthly, whereas if I get my maternity pay I can’t claim it, it’s all boggled my brain 🧠 my partner already gets PIP money but he might get the highest rate soon x

I quit my job at 25 weeks because it was too much and I've been getting my MA from the government for the last month. I get £344 every 2 weeks. I dont get UC but I do know its deducted pound for pound. Your always best of working but you need to make the best decision for you. You could also claim the carers element on UC if you dont already. I think its 180 odd a month now x

@Danielle thank you lovely! Can anyone get that pay from the government?? That’s so good! I’ve been so stressed with work and they haven’t even put forward my maternity pay because they’re so incompetent 🙈 oh brilliant thank you lovely! I didn’t know if it’s better because UC pay the rent and bills, whereas if we get the mat leave I didn’t know if they’d deduct a lot or we’d get less support overall? Because I wouldn’t be able to claim carers allowance with a full time contract x

Im NHS too, you can contact HR/Payroll to make sure you only get SMP not OMP and that way you can leave whenever (you still get KIT days and accured annual leave for at the end of mat leave too this way)

@Kathryn brilliant thank you lovely! Did you have trouble with payroll and your maternity leave? Mine has been an absolute nightmare! X

@Rebecca so much, they forgot to out me on mat leave until I'd be on it for 8m, they'd just given me basic pay. I've been back since Feb and still trying to sort out me repaying them😅🤦‍♀️

@Kathryn Nooo!! That is terrible.. I’m so sorry you had to go through that during your time with baby… do you mind me asking if you used universal credit to help you during that time? X

@Rebecca they actually overpaid me so it didn't work out so bad, I'm band 6 though so basic pay is quite decent even without shift enhancements. It was more just the stress of sorting out the repayments in the end. I didn't qualify for UC as my partners income with mine is too high but I know a few people who've done it when on SMP and it's helped them x
