How to get my fatty creamy breastmilk back?

I went to the pediatrician yesterday and was told my 8 weeks baby girl has not gained weight since her last visit. My baby is 100% breastfed. The pediatrician suggested it has to do with my breastmilk not giving her enough nutrients. No need to say that I was devastated. I exclusively pump then transfer milk to bottle feed my baby. Yes, all those pumping sessions for not so good milk!! Any tips on how to get my creamy milk back? For now I am mixing my watery breastmilk with formula. I have an appointment with my lactation consultant next week but just wanted to hear from other mamas as well. Thanks!

The consistency of the milk varies throughout the day and throughout a feed. Don't worry about it looking water, your Lactation Consultant will set you right but there's no need to chase creamy milk.

Thanks for your reply. Consistency been the same for 3 weeks now.

There is no such thing as shit milk. You might just not be getting the hind milk if you are rushing pumping sessions for example, BUT if baby hasn't been having looooads of green poops then that's probably not a issue for you. Make sure you pump every 3 hours and make sure you drain the breast. Minimum 15-20 minutes. My milk looks as though it has very little fat, a few mm layer after being in the fridge, my baby put 20oz on last week and 18oz this week... so I don't think that's the problem.

I'll be honest your pediatrician sounds like they don't know much about breastfeeding. There's no such thing as bad milk. I would definitely find a lactation consultant to talk to.

I can tell the different in my milk as I pump and sometimes I get a lot of watery milk (I over supply) I take this off and then decant it to a pot. I then continue to pump and use the later milk in bottles or half and half to ensure he gets both fore and hind milk to create the balance xx

Pediatricians are not lactation consultants. That is such horrible and inaccurate advice!! Your body will increase the water content if your baby needs it, e.g. in warmer weather or if they're sick and needing fluids. And your milk gets fattier towards the end of a feed. Your body knows what your baby needs. Unfortunately there are a lot of medical professionals who have outdated advice and don't have any interest in updating their knowledge. I had all sorts of contradictory information and it's irritatingly stressful!!

@A’s Mom I pump every 4 hours for 15 minutes but my breast are always full

@Becky I have an over supply issue as well from day 1 I have a freezer full of milk bags already…

When was her last visit? If baby is nursing well and making enough wet and dirty diapers then I wouldn’t worry so much. Babies have times of growth spurts and times when they stay the same. All breastmilk is good breastmilk. Breastmilk is always changing based on baby’s needs and your body. Sometimes a lot of fat, sometimes color changes, etc. The only thing that might help is pumping longer, but no more than 30 minutes. Even then you might not see a change in the fat. Trust that your body is fulfilling baby’s needs.

@Mia now all makes sense!!! Thank you Mamas..I felt terrible all day yesterday after my visit with pediatrics on and almost gave up breastfed

@A’s Mom after 15 minutes of pumping I get about 6oz each breast, I pump both at the same time. How often do you pump at night? I pump around 9 pm, 12 am and 4 am

My son had similar issues with weight gain when he was born. I also had to exclusively pump because he wasn’t latching. It’s a lot of work and it’s day and night! My son was sleeping through a lot of feeds and I couldn’t figure out how to get him to eat more. It turns out, he was using the wrong sized bottle nipple. As soon as we switched nipple sizes, he was almost always finishing his bottles and it helped stimulate his hunger! Maybe something to consider? Like everyone else said, it’s likely nothing to do with your milk. Breast milk isn’t typically creamy, especially when you’re doing full pump sessions. If you leave a bottle in the fridge overnight, you can see tons of fat separate up to the top. Thats all your infant needs

I would make sure you are emptying out your breast completely while pumping.

I find that if I don't feed for a longer time than usual the milk is much more watery, that is because our brain signals the breast that baby hasn't drank in a while and might be thirsty so the milk is more watery to hydrate them first. So possibly increasing the frequency of pumping might help? Also usually when a baby is latched on, their saliva signals our bodies to make exactly the kind of milk they need at the time so if possible maybe you could try doing lots of skin to skin and maybe letting baby latch a few times?

Are you on a diet because you got to eat healthy for your milk

Do you smoke while you breastfeeding

If you smoke while your breastfeeding you're taking all the neutral stuff out of your milk for the baby

@Abby same I now donate it as well as I am pumping 4 times a day that’s so reduced and still loads xx

I am alarmed your paediatrician believes breast milk cannot be fatty enough or appropriate on its own for baby? I’m quite horrified they’ve recommended you mix with formula!? Why!?

@Sylvia no I don’t smoke

You might need to pump longer. The let down or first part of the milk is watery and the hind milk comes a bit later after a feeding. I had this issue exclusively breastfeeding my daughter because I was an over supplier and my daughter would get full before my hind milk would come in so I’d have to pump for a little bit and then latch her after my leg down came all the way through. Also maybe look at the flange sizes for your breast pump. If you don’t have the correct size it can effect your milk you are able to get. Just a few thoughts.
