Sugar water for colic?

Hi,
My doctor has recommended I give my 5 week old a bottle of cooled boiled water with 7 teaspoons of sugar in and then reduce by a teaspoon each day 😳 Is that right or completely insane?? I didn’t think young babies could have water let alone sugar!!

That sounds odd to me! We just use infacol which works great for babies colic but if that’s what your doctor has recommended then by all means try it. A lot of doctors don’t recommend actual medicine remedies for small babies but they’re there for sale and safe. It’s your choice x

That sounds ridiculous!! That amount of water can lead to fatal water intoxication and that much sugar is not good for them! Depending on where you are infacol could work a babocush pillow is something I would highly recommend it saved us!

we’ve tried infacol and it’s not really helped 😩 I think we’ve just got to ride it out at this point 😭

They can have an oz of cooled boiled water a day but usually that’s advised by HV/ GP for constipation x

he said to do what I’d usually do for formula which is 3oz 😩

that sounds like really outdated advice, i personally wouldn’t do that. but you must use your own judgement, usually there is an underlying reason for colic like reflux or an intolerance so i’d have a look into that. my son was very colicky and it ended up being silent reflux, once we got the right formula and medication he was a different baby x

Does sound odd. A quick Google says it's okay under doctor supervision, but it sounds like an awful lot of sugar and water. It's supposed to help them with the pain so less crying and discomfort.
