Feeding

So baby is 3 days old right now, my plan was to breastfeed, tried for the first 24 hours or so and really struggled due to my section, couldn’t find a way both me and baby were comfy and her latch was super painful and hospital staff weren’t the most helpful. Moved onto formula but want to start expressing some and combination feeding. Can I just give baby a formula bottle here, breast milk bottle there or do I have to mix the formula and breastmilk or do I need to give her an equal amount of both?

I don't have an answer to give you (sorry) but I'm thinking you could get in touch with the Infant Feeding team of your borough or hospital you gave birth in and ask them to help you establish a plan for combo feeding? As this may take into account your baby's weight and your breastfeeding goals. X

We combi feed and you don't have to mix the milk, we do breast milk during the day and formula at night :) but you will still have to pump at night to keep your supply x

I combi feed and give her formula and breast milk as and when I fancy it. We did use to do formula st night and breast milk in the day but we have recently found that she’s better with breast milk at night , she sleeps better, so we now do that. I advise getting a double electric pump and a pumping bra, that way you can potter about and do things whilst expressing. It is time consuming xx

Hi all, sorry to jump on this post but I’m preparing for my first bubba in December and planning on pumping and formula feeding (never wanted to breastfeed). @Bobbie Wilson @Rachel I was how often throughout day & night did you need to pump to keep supply up? I’m looking at getting a double breast pump too x

@Sarah I'm currently doing it every 2ish hours during the day and whenever he wakes at night (currently twice) so works put about 3 hours at night. I'm doing every 2 hours with a power pump in the evening to increase my supply but its recommended every 3 hours/8 pumps a day x

@Bobbie Wilson thank you! Gosh that’s a lot 😬 Does it feel hard to keep up? X

@Sarah it's hard I'm not gonna lie! It is getting easier though as I'm getting used to it :) my main difficulty is fitting it in when my toddler needs me and so does LO 😂

@Sarah I tend to pump every 3 hours throughout the day and then at night I’ll pump before I go to bed, then again around her 2 feed and then again around 7. Sometimes if I wake up and my breasts are leaking and rock hard I’ll pump as well but that’s only happened a few times. For me it works and keeps my supply up, the amount I pump feeds her for the day and night now and has some for the next day. It is a lot and can be time consuming, I strongly recommend a wearable pump though, the cup ones so you can do things around the house if you need to. I also found them easier to wear whilst feeding my baby too xx

@Rachel thank you. I was looking at the momcozy s12 pump as lots of recommendations on here. What do you use? X
