Playroom Suggestions

Hello,

I have 12 feet by 12 feet room(which is one side open with wood floor), I wanted some suggestions as to how to convert it to play room considering its big so I need really big play mats to cover the floor up for my 8 month old and I am not sure investing in 500$ just for mats would be wise for few months as he is already crawling so once he starts walking, the whole house is a playroom and he wont stay at one place.
