Finding council house

Hi everyone. I’ve had to flea our ‘family’ home due to various reasons including mental abuse. My question is how did people find a council house?! I’ve been on the list for 3 months I know it’s not long. But I’m living on a sofa at the moment between two houses and it’s taking it’s toll!
