Hey all,
I’m a little late having it but my consultant has finally booked me in for the glucose test! I have a few questions below if anyone could please answer for me?
Does it taste disgusting? I’m a heaver so if it’s grim it is not staying down
How long do I have to be in the hospital for?
What happens if I have GD?

I had the test at around 33/34 weeks. I don't have it, so I can't advise on what happens, but you'll be in the hospital for about 2 hours, and I personally thought it tasted like lucozade sports. It's just sweet and orange flavoured. Good luck! Don't be too worried, they'll look after you no matter what happens 🙂

I had the test around 28 weeks but I also got negative so can't advice with that part but it tasted like flat Fanta, not too bad and at that point I was hungry and thirsty so it was welcomed lol, bring a book or phone to keep you busy for 2 hours or so. It wasn't a bad experience personally x

Ive not had this test i'm 33 weeks is everybody meant to?

@Hayley nope not everyone, only people with certain risk factors. Big baby, high bmi etc x

Thank you ladies, I feel better knowing it’s not going to taste awful haha. And I’ll take something with me to keep me entertained. I don’t know why I work myself up so much 🤣 x

I've had mine too. The drink is very sweet. They'll ask you if you want to stay in hospital or if you'd prefer going home. But you shouldn't do any chores at home just sit and relax

I described it as syrupy undiluted raspberry cordial.
No it wasn't nice but it also wasnt the worst thing i have drank. You know it's gotta be done for health of you/baby so keep that in your mind to get you through. The empty stomach doesn't make it easier either.
Take your your phone with stuff downloaded to watch or take a book the 2hrs wait is boring af x

The drink tastes very sweet but has no flavouring in it. I personally didn't like it but managed to drink it anyway.
It's two hours between both blood samples. Bring in some food as you might feel very hungry or light-headed after the whole thing. My partner came with me, and having him carrying for me while I wasn't feeling well from having only a sugary drink in the am made a big difference for me.
If you have GD, your midwife will call you as well as someone that will take you through what it means and what you need to do. The big changes for me were testing my Glucose 4 times a day and having to adapt my diet to avoid any spike.
If they consider that your GD cannot be managed with diet only, they'll get you on a medication for it. They'll also monitor you and baby a little bit more as GD often means baby might grow too big or a higher risk to develop pre clampsia. They'll tell you in your options for childbirth have changed

I had mine Fri was OK tbh tasted like a capri sun..... The worst part was the waiting around because I was so hungry

It's different wherever you go I just had the glucose syrup mixed with water that tasted like flat overly sugary lemonade 😂

It’s absolutely fine, just follow it with a small water chaser (they should provide this). Then 2h or so in the hospital so take something / someone to keep you occupied. A small sacrifice to know if you have GD or not, which should be taken seriously.

i had it at 28 weeks, it made me feel nauseous but it was probably just because i was uncomfortable in the hospital since i was sat with people either side of me in this packed waiting room. i don’t think the atmosphere will be quite as bad at your hospital, as i’ve not heard anyone else have an experience like mine 😭 it tasted like calpol mixed with orange caprisun. the taste was okay it was mainly the fact it wasn’t cold that was disgusting (im so fussy i only like refrigerated drinks😂). i was in there for 2 hours for the test, but i had to wait 30mins to be seen at first so it took 2.5hrs overall. they said they’d give me a call within 72hrs if i had GD, if i didn’t hear anything then that meant i was negative and the midwife would just give the details when i next saw her. I was negative so i’m not sure what happens after that x
