Ok I realise this might be a funny question, but is the smell unpleasant? I would want skin on skin right away, but at the same time the thought of holding them for an hour in that state is a bit off-putting. Does the residue on them dry and crust? 😂 can the midwife clean them while they're lying on you? How long does it take for them to get cleaned? Like, I don't mind it for a minute, but I'm struggling to imagine cuddling and kissing a slimy (crusty?) mess for an hour. Any experience?

No bad smell

They actually smell lovely cos of your hormones u have this lovely new baby smell.

You'll like their smell. Also the white stuff they come out covered in shouldn't be cleaned off as it's good for them. Honestly you'll be so relieved they are healthy and here you won't notice x

Honestly i think you'll be so overwhelmed that you just had a human being come out of you and you'll be so busy looking at their little face that the smell or gooey stuff they come in will be the last thing on your mind. Newborns are pretty gross but you'll be so full of oxytocin that you'll just be in awe and amazement that they're finally there x

I’m actually baffled by this post. Imagine thinking your own newborn baby is disgusting and not wanting to hold it for long because of that.
Sorry to be blunt but I am sure you’ll meet him/her and not worry about the mess!

I think that will be the last thing on your mind… hopefully anyway!

I agree and wouldn’t find them disgusting but they’ll still be a little icky 😂
I never said disgusting. When I have my period and wear a pad, I like the feeling after the shower when it's nice and fresh. Doesn't mean I think my vagina is disgusting. When my partner comes back sweaty from a gym, I'll give him a kiss but would prefer to cuddle after he's had a shower. If my baby poops on me that's fine, but I won't revel in it for hours, I will change him and then go back to cuddling. Different folks different strokes! No need to judge.

Your baby won't smell like your period or vagina ir anything like that so dont worry 😂. It's been in amniotic fluid which is slightly sweet in scent. The white stuff they are covered is called vernix, it's good for their skin so shouldn't be washed off straight away that being said, usually babies who come early will have a lot more of this, however some babies who are late may not have very much of this at all, as it will have been absorbed into the skin. It doesnt crust, and it isn't slimy more like a moisturiser if that makes sense😅
You will have the golden hour of skin to skin, then when you have a shower, baby will likely be wiped and dressed then too. This might sound like ages, but when your in that moment it will go super fast, as whilst you are cuddling baby, they will be delivering the placenta and all that sort of stuff. You will be in more need of a wash than baby, with all the sweaty hard work you have just been through - try not stress it, and just see how you feel in the moment 🥰
