Need to see if I am being out of order. So my mother in law wants to do a regular child care on a Monday when I go back to work. My in laws live 30 minutes away down the A1M towards London (without traffic) and they want me to drop my son off to him as MIL has anxiety around driving. She can drive and does drive; she just doesn’t like it. Now my issue is this- when I drive to work usually it takes me a good 40 minutes to get there due to traffic as it’s going towards London (the other side going towards Peterborough is pretty clear) as I work in Stevenage and it’s SUPER busy at both junctions and the traffic becomes standstill. I leave my house at 7.15ish and I come off the motorway two junctions before my in laws house. So basically if I was to drop him off I have to drive past my work, sit in traffic for god knows how long drop him off then drive to work, work for 10 hours, 8am-6pm then go pick him up and then drive home. For me that’s too much especially with a young child. My husband says it’s child care but he works from home and we only have one car between us which is mine. He suggested his mum meets us in Stevenage but it still means I have to get my son up and ready, be stressed about traffic, work and then go get him and I don’t want to do it. I would rather pay for childcare. Am I being an asshole or unreasonable? My mum comes to our house all the time and she lives 5 minutes away from my in laws and she agrees with me that the trip is too much - especially as the drive is so easy up the A1M.

I personally wouldn't do that journey each day with a small child in tow. Also, if she has anxiety around driving, what would happen in an emergency? Would she be willing to drive your child to the hospital or expect you to come and pick him up and take him?

I live in the same area by the sounds of it, and no I wouldn’t do it if I was you. That road backs up constantly, especially when there’s an accident sounds super stressful. I’d ideally like to drop baby off in the morning to childcare and drive straight to work! X
