Damp/mould

Not baby related
But we’ve been in our rented flat since February. I have reported the damp and mould in our bathroom three times since being in the flat. I already had to sort the mould around the windows myself but where the mould is in our bathroom I can’t get to.
It’s in a skylight. We haven’t heard anything back about it, we even had our 6 month inspection and the person who came to do this even said it’s bad, the pictures they took was forwarded to the landlords. Still nothing back. I have explained that my daughter suffers with asthma.

What else can I do about this? There’s other problems in the flat they haven’t sorted either (problems that were here before we moved in)

I’ll attach photos of mould below
First photo is when we moved in and second photo is it now. We have the fan going in the bathroom all the time

we can’t move because our tenancy agreement is for 12 months so have to wait until February. We’re already struggling enough with money😩

I would talk to your estate agent and tell them that you either need to break your agreement or you need a reduction in rent so that you can pay for the removal of mould. The place should be liveable without worrying about mould!

Avatar

I didn’t realise I could do this. It’s getting to the time of year where my daughters asthma (and cough with that) is at its worst

Avatar

you absolutely can, your landlord has a duty of care that’s not being followed. I would write an email so that you have their response in writing!

I only have the estate agents details, I’ve never had my landlords details. The other day they changed our energy supplier without informing us and the estate agents told us to contact our landlords and even after saying I didn’t have them they still wouldn’t give them to me🤣

Avatar

I normally only have estate agents details too, part of their job is to liaise with the landlord on your behalf. Write the email to the estate agents and tell them to forward on the to landlord as well. Who changed the e grey supplier? I hope it was the landlord and not the estate agent 😂

Avatar

that’s what I thought to but I’m getting nowhere with the mould and when the landlords changed our energy supplier and I wanted this to be confirmed before I moved forward with it, asked for their details and was denied 🤣

Avatar

Oh okay. I’ll ring them in the morning and try one last time and if nothing gets done I’ll go straight to the council

Avatar

I’m a property manager & you should definitely contact the council, if it’s a structural issue & not ventilation issue. Is it a window or just sky light? They can enforce the landlord to carry out the work required, & will get environmental health involved

Avatar

You can get someone to fix it and then withhold rent to recover the cost

Avatar

it’s just a sky light there’s no way of opening it. It’s just so frustrating and off putting that they don’t sort these things out when you first report them😩 thank you I’ll definitely get onto the council

Avatar

I was thinking of that but I also don’t want to risk being kicked out and being homeless with a 16 month old😩

Avatar

It’s actually very very hard to get a tenant evicted, but appreciate you really don’t need that headache!!!!!!

Avatar

oh really I didn’t realise it’s illegal! I knew it weren’t right even them not informing us! The last tenants that were here stopped paying their rent and now I can see why if this is the issues they had. I’ll give them a go as well! Thank you for all your advice

Avatar

ohhh, I know in the tenancy agreement it says we can’t change our energy supplier ourselves 😂

Avatar

oh I’ll definitely get that sorted then! Seems like they’ve pulled the wool over eyes especially because they know this is our first home and we was desperate

Avatar

its really bad they’ve put an non ventilated skylight in a bathroom. I used to sell them and you’ll keep getting this issue because of condensation and the different temperatures from inside and outside. A trickle vent should be there at least to allow moisture to escape. Ideally it would be an opener for when you use the bathroom. Also for your standard windows, I’d try push for trickle vents put into them

Avatar

thank you, I sent an email to the estate agents telling them all this needs to be sorted immediately or I’ll be taking it further. They got back to us and said they’ll send someone out to improve the ceiling in the bathroom. The energy supplier he’s not sure why it’s been changed because apparently neither them or the landlords would change it mid way through a term so told them that needs to be sorted with the landlords then which I can’t do without their details as they’re refusing to give them to me🤣 thank you for all your advise though I really appreciate it

Avatar

that’s what I thought too. I’ll mention this when the contractor comes out and takes a look at it
