It is based out of Texas and it is a fantasy series
If you like SYFY and Dystopian type books you'll love the Skyward Series by Brandon Sanderson. All of his books have been amazing so far and make sure you choose the ones narrated by Suzy Jackson. She is amazing with switching between characters and its just so easy to listen to her. I personally didn't realize I liked the genre until I was reccomended it off hand.
