Advice

So I got a cat and my significant other keeps hitting him really hard. He says if I report him he will kick me out on the streets. I'm tired of his attitude towards my cat he said he would open the door and let him out which the cat is microchipped but still. If I decide I want to leave then I won't have a roof over my head or the kids head. I don't have enough money for a place of my own uggghhhhh.

Get rid of the cat for now until you can afford your own place. But your significant other is a red flag. Put yourself in a better position hun.

I can't afford a place to live by myself

the cat has a microchip so he's under my name

This sounds incredibly unsafe for you, your kids and the cat.. please do what you can to get out of that situation before things get worse

Prayers for you, your children, and cat!
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. You definitely need to leave him or keep the cat AWAY from him. He’s psychotic and can potentially resort to harming you and your children.

If you can’t afford to move out (which you should) the cat needs to be rehomed.

Please call a domestic violence shelter and get you and the kids and cat out. You might have to rehome the cat and that’s ok.

Do you have anyone you could stay with? I agree with the others, being agressive toward animals is a warning sign and threatening to make you homeless is awful. It’s abusive. I would look for women’s shelters or support through women’s centers in your area. Emotional abuse is abuse and that is what your significant other is doing from what you describe. I’m so sorry you are being treated like this. You 100% deserve a better partner.

As a domestic violence survivor, this screams abuse. And not just for the cat. Do you have family you can stay with? Low income housing or section 8 housing? A woman's shelter? There are free and confidential resources here. There's a thing for it over my comment right now. Try them please.

I say rehome the cat but I would be concerned about who he’s gonna beat once he doesn’t have the cat to beat on anymore. You need to get out of there . I understand you said you can’t afford your own place, I recommend reaching out to local women and children shelters that can put a roof over your head and help you and you kids get into a place of y’all own so you don’t have to depend on a terrible person like that.

Rehome the cat. Start looking for government aid now and make sure you explain you’re in an abusive relationship and it’s threatening you to kick you and your kids on the street. Don’t settle and stay because now the situation it’s hard. Don’t raise your kids to think this is okay, and by staying you’re doing just that. Good luck momma

Rehome the cat and get you and your kids out. There’s help out there and you’re not the first to have no money and still leave. It’s possible.

Avatar

This is so sad. I hope you get help and leave him. It is not fair to you or the helpless cat to stay in this situation.

I think you should give the cat to a better home where he will be loved and appreciated and not abused because you letting him abuse him with no consequences is only hurting the innocent cat and no one let alone a defenseless animal should be forced to live like that but if I were you I would call the cops because if he would hurt an animal he’ll hurt you too and your kids

Avatar

I would first find a new home for the cat, then work on getting to a position you can move yourself and the kids out. It's clearly not a good situation to live in.

Ditto what everyone else said.
Also, you seem to be stuck on the cat having a microchip with your name on it. It can be changed once he has a new owner. If you got him from a shelter/rescue, reach out to them.. They typically take the pets back, it's usually in the adoption contract.
But the cat needs a new home.

Only a question of time until he kicks you and your kids, won’t be easy but there are support you can get to get out of there

Avatar

he was being hyper

It’s only a matter of time before he hits you and the children.
He is abusive and dangerous. Please contact the SPCA or rehome the cat.
Your children are watching him abuse a living creature. It’s making that a NORMAL thing in their brains. They are most likely afraid of him, especially if they love the cat. He’s teaching them that hitting and abusing something is okay and that is emotional and mental abuse of your children.

Please use the resources people posted to contact a domestic abuse shelter and find safety for you and your children

There are domestic shelters where the animals are allowed, or you can find an organization like Lost Our Home that would be able to help with the care of your cat while you get out of that situation.

I think it's not right he is hitting the cat, sad reality is people grow up in different ways though and some old style homes use to disregard animals like that, he clearly doesn't sound like a cat person, getting an abuse charge over him not wanting a cat in his home doesn't sound right. Cat needs to be rehomed and then the situation needs readdressed. Obviously if he gets a power trip from you "listening to him" instead of him being appreciative of you guys mutually living in a home together that's a signal right there that there is more. I am not condoning his behavior, just saying there are more ways to solve this specific instance. It sucks giving up a beloved pet, is there family that would take it in?

Avatar

I have videos of him verbally abusing me and my daughter

Avatar

he already put hands on me and the charge got dismissed

Avatar

I feel like that’s another reason to leave but in the end you seem you already have your mind made up to stay so idk

Avatar

Question, have you done anything to help better the cats or your daughters situation since posting this?

Avatar

yes I have a worker and she is helping me escape
