Housing benefits

Hi all, so me and my partner have split up he broke it off 3 weeks after our baby is born. 4 months later we are still living together, I’ve tried to make it work but I over it.
I am looking to move out I have applied for a council house but I know this will take a while so I want to move to a private tenant housing and claim housing benefits. Does anyone know how this work how much I could claim ect.
N.B I would move in with my mum but there is no space for me and the baby. She is very supportive and helping me every step of the way.
TIA x

It’s better you go through the homeless route and have the council house you. As if you go private you’re not seen as homeless and you’re not a priority. They will tell you to apply for UC, to get your rent paid and any other finances you’ll need.

Call universal credit. They are super friendly & helpful! You can get money as a single income parent as well but can’t remember the name of it. Good luck!

There is a limit to how much the gov will pay for your rent. In my area it’s £625 which is less than my actual rent. It’s possible to then apply for extra help from the council.
