Blood thinners

Hey all. Has anyone else been given blood thinners to take whilst pregnant just because they’re having twins? I’ve been given folic acid, aspirin and blood thinners! Feels a bit overwhelming as I didn’t have to take anything for my daughter. I am 16 weeks at the moment x

I was on baby aspirin and for the first twelve weeks progesterone too cause I had 3 miscarriages before them, baby aspirin is a blood thinner so I wonder why they have you on both

I was on aspirin but then developed a pulmonary embolism so was on them for 3 months from 24 weeks x

Think I’m going to call my midwife tomorrow before taking the blood thinner tbh! I’ve taken the folic acid and aspirin this evening (was consultant who gave it to me Tuesday) x

@Leanne I was on both aspirin and the blood thinners and was on 2 injections a day, by specialist orders but definitely chat to them and hopefully they will be able to advise to make it all a little less overwhelming! Hope you and babes are okay 💜

I was taking aspirin from 12 weeks and Clexane injections from 28 weeks until my twins are 6 weeks old. Because I was having twins, my age and my bmi all meant I was/am higher risk of blood clots. The clexane is to help prevent it. My twins are 11 days old now so 4 and half weeks of injections to go 🤣 x

@Charlie thank you! Was my first consultant appointment Tuesday as it’s twins! Was suppose to be 13:20 didn’t get seen until 14:50 then was only in there 10 mins, now I’m thinking I should’ve asked more questions! Gonna call my midwife before I take take them just to have it explained! Everything is fine I’ve just been told to take it all because I’m having twins! Xx

@Leanne yeah I'd definitely ask first just to at least know why and make an informed decision

@Hannah ah wow! Yeah only reason he gave me was because it twins! I am only 16 weeks and been told to take it all from now, and the blood thinners to continue 6 weeks after their birth x

@Leanne having twins is overwhelming enough let alone everything else that comes along with it! I would always forget to ask stuff so ended up writing things down the week coming up to the appointments and taking it with me 😅 definitely worth chatting to midwife though I hope they can put you more at ease! Xx

Thanks all! Was reading the leaflet and there’s a part about epidurals and spinal blocks potentially not working if you’re on it 🤔 x

Was on 1 aspirin from the moment I found out I was pregnant and started taking 2 at 12 weeks. Helps to prevent /delay preeclampsia. There is a higher risk of preeclampsia with multiples.

@Ashley ah yes thanks! I’ve taken the aspirin, it’s the blood thinner I haven’t after reading the leaflet x

I was on aspirin with my twins x

I’ve been on aspirin since 12 weeks and blood thinning injections since 28 weeks. I still feel slightly sceptical about whether it’s necessary or not though and I’ve asked 3 different doctors and a midwife who all insist it is. Their reasons for me were because it’s twins and I’m over 35 but they said twins alone is reason enough for them to put you on them

@Jo interesting! I score 2 x

I’m pregnant with twins via IVF, and also have the MTHr gene variation which increase ,y risk for miscarriage so I’ve been on progesterone, blood thinning injections and aspirin (plus other stuff which they’ve slowly reduced/removed) from the beginning. I’m currently 15weeks. The blood thinners and aspirin were to reduce my risk of miscarriage, plus to reduce the risk of preeclampsia and to thin my blood as the other medication I was on increased my risk of clots. At 12 weeks they kept me on blood thinners but told me to stop taking aspirin after two episodes of spotting because my blood was too thin, but I know they want me to start taking it again at some point to reduce the risk of preeclampsia.

I’ve been on baby aspirin from 12 weeks. I just started the injections this week after refusing earlier, I hate them with a passion. I’ll be on the injections until 6 weeks after birth, the aspirin I have to stop at 36 weeks. I’m older with a high bmi

Yes I’m on aspirin x

They’ve got me on baby aspirin to try to prevent preeclampsia

Thanks everyone! I spoke to my midwife today who agreed she didn’t understand any I’d been given blood thinners. How confusing x
