My LO is nearly 4 weeks old and I'm just so overwhelmed. I find it really hard to settle him and most days I get about 3 hours of sleep, if I'm lucky! He won't be put down to sleep, so it's either contact naps or my partner takes him on a walk.
I'm grateful because my partner is incredibly supportive. But I'm really missing my "old life". I miss being able to just go to bed, or just go in the shower. Because LO sleeps on me, I have to hold in my wee, I miss just being able to go to the toilet! I'm EBF too, so feel the constant pressure, but I've been told it gets easier.
I just want to run away. I feel like my LO and partner don't need me. Does anyone else feel like this? And does it get easier?

Don’t worry I totally feel u! It does get easier! Hang in there! You will get through this fourth trimester

Hey lovely. I’m sorry you’re having a hard time. It absolutely gets easier. I’d say the first 6ish weeks are the hardest. EBF is hard going too, you’re doing a really good job. You will still be recovering from the birth, and you would’ve had a huge hormonal shift. Couple that with a huge life adjustment of a newborn baby and I’m not surprised you’re feeling overwhelmed! Have you spoken to your partner about how you’re feeling? Will your LO sleep on your partner? Do you have much support aside from your partner? Lean on people where you can - anything anyone can do to help such as meals, cleaning, watching LO so you can sleep or shower, taking them out for a bit so you can have some you time. I promise you it does get easier, you start to find your groove - hang in there xxx

Oh this breaks my heart because I sooo get it! I don’t have a “village” just my husband and I and those first few months are HARD! But it does pass. But with that said it would not hurt to talk to your doctor and partner about this. Staying ahead of mental health issues as much as you can is so important for you and your family. Also if you need to step outside in another room to breath and babes is crying THATS OK! Mom guilt is big and real. Babies cry, babies test boundaries. And you needing to take a breather is not super important to you but also baby.

I’ve learned it’s an easier life if you just have your LO on you. I give in some days and hardly here a peep out of her. I’ve been edging her away from sleeping on me and got a crib that opened on to the bed soo I can hold her hand and talk to her if she wakes. She’s mainly in my bed but slowly going to move her

Hey, I totally felt like this with my baby. Even now she’s 2 years old and I just want to run sometimes! It does get easier, every stage is hard in different ways but the newborn stage, is super hard because it’s change. Your whole life has changed, your relationship, you, the home dynamics and like you said the most simple humane things become extremely difficult. It’s really good your partner is supportive, I miss my old life all the time but there are SO many days where I love mine now, it sounds silly but sometimes in the morning when I wake up for a wee, my toddler comes with me and now it’s just normal 🥲. We’re having another baby, which was planned, so I promise, for me to do this twice it gets easier!! You’ll find yourself in the swing of things soon.
Maybe mention to your midwife/HV or whoever is looking after you health wise on your next visit or chat. These feelings are totally normal but also worth speaking to a professional about. Good luck x

Having a new baby can be incredibly overwhelming! Know that you are not alone in feeling that way. The newborn stage is very intense, and with EBF, even more so. It does get easier! Your baby’s sleep will even out, but it does take some time. I really recommend that you do three things: 1. Get screened for postpartum depression and anxiety by your doctor. It’s very common, and really important to address for your mental health. Your hormones are going to be all over the place for a while still.
2. Give yourself some grace!!! You are only four weeks into this very new thing called motherhood, and it is a BIG change in your life!! It’s totally normal to take months if not years to adjust.
3. Ask for help from someone in your support group. They can help with some things on your to do list, or would gladly hold the baby so you can take a shower, etc.
Best of luck!! You have already done amazing things by having a baby, and you are up to this!!

I totally understand as have been feeling very similar. My anxiety has been through the roof and I’ve been happy to let my husband do as much as possible. Please speak to your doctor and health visitor - mine have referred me to the perinatal mental health team and changed my medication.
Everyone I speak to tells me it gets easier but at the moment that’s hard to believe.
Currently winding baby downstairs while husband sleeps just so he can take over in a few hours!
Please reach out and talk to friends and family xx

Hey, congratulations on your little one, my son is 4 months old and sounds exactly like yours. I co-sleep as he won’t sleep anywhere else and I totally agree with you on the holding pee thing in also because I have to do that of a night if I don’t want to move him or wake my baby.. you know what has given us all the sleep needed though? Of a night I set myself in my full body pregnancy pillow, put baby on the boob and lay back with my arm supported by the pillow so he cannot move backwards. I go to sleep like that! Baby sleeps the night through as do all of us. When he is hungry he latches on and when he has had enough he unlatches. In the morning when he decided it’s time for me wake up he latches on and off repeatedly and keeps staring at me until my eyes open and when they do he gives massive smiles so ultimately I get up😂 at 4 weeks he won’t smile but he will latch and unlatch to wake you and be wide awake.. you will feel fully refreshed after a few days of this!

It’s so hard and deffo a major shock to the system and a massive life change! 4 weeks is soo early. Sleep deprivation is hard and so is EBF.
I would suggest
1) if your feeling overwhelmed please speak to your health visitor/gp & your partner.
2) if you have anyone to help get as much sleep as you can, sleep deprivation makes everything seem so much harder. Or even when your partner gets home you go for a sleep?
3) if baby doesn’t like to be put down get a sling! This was a game changer with my first - he hated to be put down and only contact napped! This will allow you to do things you need to do in the house or even out and about!
It definitely gets easier and you will find your own routine! Don’t be so hard on yourself! Your doing an amazing job! 💗

The benefit of breastfeeding is that you don’t have to move unlike a bottle fed baby needing you to physically get up. After a certain amount of time asleep (usually 20 mins) they can be passed to our partner without waking so you can do what you need to. I am now looking to get a bed guard so I can put him on the bed so I can get up and pee when everyone is asleep but in that time I wake my partner (if you have to wake then I’m sure your partner won’t mind waking for a few mins either).
I do all this that i mentioned, wait for him to be asleep then pass him over and get in the shower, take a pee and dump🤣, wash clothes and whatever needs doing. I do this repeatedly in the day and now he is older he tolerated being put down better than before so I have more freedom with my partner watching him play. It does get better I promise but I can agree I didn’t think it would be quite like this!

Sorry to hear u are having such a hard time, reading this made me remember how i felt exactly the same. The first 4/5weeks I struggled so much. It does get better ❣️

You need sleep. No sleep made me thinking all kinds of stuff. That baby needs you! If at all possible could you pump for a night and your SO take the baby that night. One full nights rest will set you back up for a bit. Good luck ❤️

I completely know how you feel I did run away. When his dad got him I put him in his arms and left.
Yes it gets easier. But keep trying to let him down it takes a while for it to work sometimes.

I remember this feeling - know it gets so much better ❤️
This stage (along with all the factors you mentioned) are so so hard, and looking back if I could change one thing about how I approached it, it would be to get more help - especially someone to talk to about it regularly.
I had a therapist and I wish I had spoken to her more to understand what was normal/a result of lack of sleep, etc. and what was more concerning.
Know that you will find yourself again, and aspects your love about your old life will come back again 💕 Promise.
