Alcohol while breastfeeding?

I know the official recommendation is to wait 2 hours after each drink, but I’ve also heard 1 drink doesn’t hurt, and “if I’m tipsy, my milk is tipsy” (so if you’re NOT tipsy, you’re fine…)

Thoughts?? Not planning to get wasted, but would be nice to have a glass of wine with dinner here and there, and not have to over-think timing, have a bottle ready, etc.

I usually wait 2 hours because I'm paranoid like that or have a drink after baby goes to bed but I've heard a lot of women say it's fine to feed right after as long as you're feeling fine. "If you can find the baby, you can feed the baby"

So there is a lot of controversy on this and hopefully no one tries to fight me. Breastmilk is not from the contents of your stomach but from bloodstream and alcohol content in milk is lower than in bloodstream. I have had a few nights where I had a glass of wine and breastfed not long after. It’s perfectly fine

@Emma I've always been confused by this saying and definitely not fighting you, I just don't get how it could be from the bloodstream but baby can still get an upset stomach or a diaper rash from something you ate. 😩

I think it’s because whether it’s alcohol or food it’s still in your bloodstream just in a smaller amount. I could be wrong though. It’s confusing

Get the strips to be safe

I have alcohol strips that i've used if i've had more than one drink and need to feed LO before the 2 hour mark. But if ive just had one glass then I don't usually bother, unless it was a spirit with higher alcohol content

Have a glass of wine with your dinner it will be fine! If you’re worried then feed as your drinking the alcohol because it’ll take time for it to peak in your system (think it’s like an hour but varies) so when you’re actually drinking the alcohol is the best time to feed

that’s what my husband said! The logic is definitely there. He said the same with caffeine - and that if caffeine (in moderation) is okay, why isn’t alcohol?

I love that - if you can find the baby, you can feed the baby 😂

I felt like when my sons were very young, like newborns, my drinking affected them more no matter how much I drank. As they got older though a drink here or there never bothered them. If anything they slept better. I went by the rule of as long as I felt fine doing it it would be ok. Obviously, I didn’t get wasted and nurse them. But occasionally, I was a bit tipsy and nursed and my son was fine.
