Adderall and pregnancy

Does anyone have experience with adderall and pregnancy?
Ive been diagnosed with adhd and mdd since i was 20y.o and even tho i have mixed feelings about diagnosis and meds i will say that medication (adderall and antidepressants) definitely makes day to day life alot less challenging. With my first pregnancy i stopped all medication but now im currently 17 weeks pregnant with my second child, my first son just turned 2. Pregnant with a toddler and no family support has been taking a toll on me and im considering restarting my meds. This post is mainly to get advice from anyone who has taken adderall while pregnant or if you know someone who did and what their experience was.

I wouldn’t advise it but definitely speak with your OB! I’m sorry for your anguish and hope things brighten up soon. Let the community know if you need anything. There are lots of wonderful ladies that are here to help!

SSRIs are okay, stimulants no

Anyone saying no probably does not have adhd.... I have it and also tried stopping my first pregnancy. I had to start it again at 15 weeks because when my ADHD is untreated, it causes severe anxiety for me and I was barely functioning. My daughter was born healthy with no issues and she was not small. They say it may cause baby to be slightly smaller but that did not happen with mine. Lol

In this pregnancy I have a just turned 16 month old and told my OB I wasn't stopping it at all this time and she said it was totally fine.

The only thing I changed was i switched to an IR instead of XR and dropped my dose to about half. I was on 30mg XR with 5 IR before first then was on 10-20 IR a day. 10 in the morning and either 0/5/10 in the afternoon depending on how my day was going. That was enough to be helpful at the time then I maintained that during breastfeeding because it's also totally ok for that and had zero affect on my daughter. I never switched back to my old dose because I stopped breastfeeding in may and found out I was pregnant early july just after my girl turned 1. I did up to 15mg at some point while breastfeeding and kept on that. I forget to take a second dose most days tho, but the days I remember it definitely helps. And again sometimes I take only half dose in afternoon.

People will try to scare you, but the truth is that adderall specifically has never caused negative affects in pregnancy and birth, they just cant mark it as "safe" because its unethical to do clinical trials for it. I think ritalin is one they dont recommend, but idr why. Adderall tho is a dif compound and not harmful. The general consensus is that the benefits outweigh the unknowns. And IR is easier and quicker to breakdown then XR so less passes through placenta. ❤

I’m a mental health professional and the literature supports that there are potential risks to the developing fetus. To what degree each person is comfortable taking those risks is up to them, as is the case with moms who decide to continue smoking pot, eating high mercury fish as part of their regular diet, etc etc. Do what works for you at the end of the day, but I wouldn’t rely too heavily on the anecdotal stories from others and would instead consult with my physician.

Avatar

I have ADHD and always stop it for the entire duration of pregnancy and breastfeeding. Try to get with a behavioral therapist maybe to help create non chemical strategies to making life easier, but it’s marked not safe for pregnancy for a reason, despite the bad advice from that girl above. It’s been linked to low birth weight and early labor, and messes with brain chemicals/development.

I was diagnosed with severe ADHD/ADD in 2020, & pretty sure I’m autistic as well, I just take Wellbutrin & Buspar and it’s helps with my anxiety…everyone is different though I recommend talk therapy + antidepressants/anxiety meds is probably the safest route especially depending on your trimester ! 💗

Avatar

please don’t self diagnosis autism and go around advertising yourself as such. It’s been a huge and ongoing problem and it’s hurting the genuinely diagnosed autistic community.

Avatar

not if I’m fucking autistic I’m definitely not ! I self
Diagnosed my adhd then got
Clinically diagnosed so you can fuck yourself to tell me what I am and not
Going through 💗

Avatar

and if awareness in autism wasn’t such a stigma, more people would be diagnosed which in fact black people go UNDERDIAGNOSED and women go UNDERDIAGNOSED and what am I ? A black
Woman so yes self
Diagnosis is an excellent fucking tool
For myself. Not to mention I only
Thought I had adhd and I got diagnosed with combined severe adhd/add so it was definitely more than I knew. Had I not suspected adhd I’d still be struggling with my life but thanks for invalidating
My experience because of your opinion. Bringing awareness is super important. You don’t know how difficult it is for an adult Black Women to get an autism diagnosis.

Avatar

just because you were clinically diagnosed doesn’t mean your cishet white experience is the same as every one else. Maybe I don’t have the resources or the privileges you have to get clinically diagnosed. You don’t ACTUALLY get to tell me I cant self diagnosis. Because from my experience other autists are open to Self diagnosis because of the stigma, just because you aren’t Doesn’t mean I cant. And if I was actually clinically diagnosed you’d be the one to look like a dick.

Avatar

boo fucking hoo kiss my black ass 😢😢😢

Avatar

you’re the only me putting me on a pedestal, that’s why you look like that

Avatar

ooohhh she deleted her comments.. 😂 WOW.

Also want to add, unlike ADHD, being clinically diagnosed for Autism doesnt really change anything... you cant take a pill for ASD. But being aware that you have it, or even MIGHT have it, you can certainly make adjustments in your personal life to help. I dont see how that is harmful to literally anyone. ADHD self diagnosis I can see being harmful cuz it can actually make physicians more sceptical when diagnosing and lead to people struggling getting medicated when they really need it.

My husband has never been formally diagnosed with ASD but we are like 99.9% sure he has it. He has taken several tests that are supposedly used in clinical diagnosis and available online and all have come back strongly positive. Not even just a tad, but like very clearly in the score zone having it. And it's honestly explained so much about his life and personality and has helped us learn to communicate with eachother better. He doesnt see a need to seek an official diagnosis because it wont change anything. And as far as I can tell, him adjusting his life based on this assumption has not at all harmed anyone who is clinically diagnosed....

I definitely agree, I can see adhd being dangerous for addiction seeking & selling…if you’re a good dr you should be able to tell the difference for the most part. Like I’ve sat here and wondered what else is going on with me after getting all the diagnoses I have and they all led me to autism, so I did the research for over a year now & still doing research. Took numerous tests they all came back with high scores. Like honestly it doesn’t help much being clinically diagnosed with autism, the only way I could see it being beneficial as far as the outside world is probably the working world if you have limitations and or disabled to a certain extent because of it, which no autism is the same. I’m not gonna sit there and tell somebody they can’t self diagnose when it’s really not harming anyone, especially marginalized groups. Not everyone has accessible resources to mental health.

Avatar

yeah I definitely blocked her after my last reply, like you’re not gonna stress me out on my phone ☠️

Like there’s no where in my town that diagnoses adults with autism & when I was in therapy they acted like I didn’t know what I was talking about when I asked about it but my first therapist tried to screen me for it after my adhd assessment, and when I brought it up again she acted like it was bizarre then ending up apologizing for the way she acted, and the next therapist I got reacted the same way saying that people think they just have autism because it went viral on social media, then later apologized me for reacting that way after the fact. Autism is very stigmatized, like I know I’m not obsessively researching for no reason 😭😂 like just because I’m not acting like a 3 year white male doesn’t mean I don’t have autism. You don’t grow out of autism either, there’s barely any resources for adults

Avatar

100%

Hopefully the awareness that is coming about from social platforms will help further the research on it so there are better resources and support in the future.

Avatar

she blocked me lol looked like I was talking to myself. That’s why I deleted them. I 200% stand by everything I said.

Avatar

you don’t see how it’s harmful because you’re part of the problem. Go get him diagnosed then. I have a genuinely diagnosed child that at doctor can spend a full 60 seconds with and already know without a doubt that he’s autistic. None of this “we’re mostly certain,” “we think,” ect bs.

People self diagnose looking for an excuse to be assholes, or make demands of others, which creates the stigma itself. Then genuinely autistic people get constantly questioned on the legitimacy of their disorder because so many are falsely claiming it. Go. Get. Tested. If you don’t pass as autistic, maybe- just maybe, you’re not autistic. Just as asshole hurting the actual autistic people and behaving like a douche is public. And because you’re not diagnosed, you don’t get any treatment or therapies to help with social skills, so when you do something ignorant or rude, under the guise of autistic, you’re creating a stigma my child has to live with.

Avatar

not trying to be funny but my cousin has autism and I haven’t observed her text cohesive paragraphs. Most people I encounter with autism opt for phone calls or video chats. Some also have difficulty expressing their feelings as eloquently as this young lady (not that I’m discounting her experience). Right now, you are carrying precious cargo and in a delicate space. Please don’t go back and forth with anyone online. These forums are for moms and expecting moms to have a safe place where they can ask questions and seek advice. Also, to respectfully give their input without getting cursed out.

my child, who had to dedicate 20-40 hours to ABA therapy, who needs center based social therapy and takes neurodivergent social education courses just to learn how to hope with his ailment and be socially aware enough not to mistreat, ignore or offend others. Who makes a genuine effort to try his damnedest not to freak out when someone finds and antagonizes his triggers and then he does, and he cries in the car home because he’s never going to fit in. He’s never going to keep up because his coordination is impaired, he’s always going to be obviously socially distant, and constantly have to learn how he was rude, swallow his pride and come back to apologize knowing it’s going to stay a vicious cycle.

He doesn’t demand people muffle their noise and shut up their crying babies like this self diagnosing idiots, he wears his headphones and avoids chaotic and noisy environments, even if it means sitting out on fun and parties.

This girl ain’t it and she hurts autistic people.

Avatar

all fake self diagnosers walking around proclaiming it do. And she’s even more disgusting crying about her victimhood and blackness being why it’s okay to hurt autistic kids.

Avatar

yeah everyone’s autism different, I struggle with emotions a lot actually, hence therapy helped with that. I don’t always know how to express the emotions I’m feeling because I don’t know what all of them are or how to figure them out there’s over 20+ human expressions. Women are forced to be social in society, as long as being talkative , nurturing etc. most of these things are forced on us to the point where are masking may look like we don’t fit the criteria of other peoples view of autism. Just like people say you’re to pretty to have autism, you speak so well to have autism etc. just full of stigma and ableism.

Avatar

I’m not discounting your experience but also be mindful that this is a group of pregnant women. Some may have issues carrying, experiencing anxiety, pain, or a number of issues. If you’re not presently in this stage or have children, I ask that you try your best to practice empathy and be more conscious of your anger. Not everyone will agree on everything, and that’s normal. You may even be offended - also normal. But don’t let anger carry you away.

Avatar

I didn’t say you were discounting my experience I’m just explaining something you may not understand about autism. You can’t always expect a lovely reaction out of a stranger when you discount there life experience. And anger isn’t the issue here more like ableism, uneducated belief system and probably some micro-aggressions. So whether I’m angry or happy you also don’t get to tell me what I should do or how to feel when someone says something ableist

Avatar

if I had to pick an emotion or feeling it wouldn’t be anger more like disgust probably I’m not sure, but definitely not anger. Unless that’s what you call anger then maybe I can’t explain my emotions as eloquently as you thought

Avatar

and being autistic doesn’t solely mean you can’t articulate or write well. While some autists May experience that not every single one does it’s a spectrum…..not on a scale
From 1-10

Avatar

and also whether I have children or not or whether I’m pregnant or in the same weeks of pregnancy she is it’s okay for her to not have empathy for me…. But I have to have it for her and whether I’m going through what she is or how pregnant or not pregnant or how many kids I do or don’t have has to negate whether my level of empathy should be at a certain place. Why should I have to have an appropriate level of what your approval of what enough empathy would be when she tried to invalidate my lived experience?

Avatar

yikes. I'm sorry you have had that experience. Anyone I've met, even those who are self diagnosed, are very kind people just trying to get by. None of this self righteous behavior you are claiming. They are respectful of others and mostly have found ways to cope with it quietly and try to "fit in"... also, not everyone can afford to seek a diagnosis. Especially when it wont change their life in anyway as they cant or wont attend regular therapies.

Also, there are a lot of people in the autistic community that feel ABA therapy is actually harmful. I dont have autism, but I have friends who do and I am in several nuerospicy groups since I have adhd so I hear a bit about it and that seems to be a hot topic in them. I'd recommend finding some adults with ASD you can connect with and discuss it further and maybe also help you to feel a part of a more positive community as it's clear you have very negative and angry feelings around the subject.

“can’t or won’t” “not everyone can afford a diagnosis”

8% of America is uninsured. States sponsor diagnosis and treatment through schools, early intervention and forwards, through regular evaluations. If you weren’t caught with it as a child, it is extraordinarily unlikely you actually have it. That’s just the way it is. And if you do, it’s so mild it doesn’t actually negatively impact your life in a way worth mentioning. That’s why it is EXTREMELY difficult to find any doctor who will diagnose you in adulthood. They know the extraordinary unlikelihood of an adult making it to adulthood without anyone recognizing their autism.

By 4 years old my son was being terminated from using transportation to childcare, and from every single childcare facility and summer camp I attempted. He had to repeat kindergarten after multiple detentions and suspensions leading up to an expulsion. (1/2)

I wasn’t rich or privileged at the time, with an abundance of resources most others don’t have, in fact it was quite the opposite. To give you an idea on how impoverished I was, I was in the midst of escaping domestic violence and living out of hotels, homeless, and my mom was dying at the same time.

Thankfully, there are both state and federal agencies that insured he could get a proper evaluation, and he was evaluated by the school. Free public school.

Because school was clearly capable of realizing his autism, he received services for free through them. He’s been evaluated by over 5 or 6 other individuals since then, all easily able to echo the same diagnosis within a short time span with him.

I have met people who literally think children shouldn’t be allowed in public because of their bs self diagnosed autism- because they can’t handle crying or whining. 🤦‍♀️ Who demand people not listen to music on the beach or during a picnic and expect the world to pander (2/3)

Avatar

to them and their fake diagnosis. I’ve had idiot adults I grew up with my entire childhood and was incredibly close to grow up into that same boohoo cater to me adult and self diagnosis then use it as an excuse to demand others accommodate their “disability.”

My own sister got so jealous my son was diagnosed, she doctor hopped, reporting false symptoms, to a minimum of 5 doctors, just to get a matching diagnosis to my child for attention.

These people are sick, but not with autism. It’s Münchausen syndrome and it hurts my child more than you want to admit. When you’ve lived and experienced it- for real and not through doctor google and your extreme need to self diagnosis and self label, you recognize who horrible self diagnosing nonsense is and how much it hurts real autistic children. It’s the equivalent to fake rape victims crying rape because their boyfriend dumped them. It hurts real victims.

If you’ve been evaluated as someone said above, and weren’t diagnosed, (3/4)

Avatar

then that’s that… everyone here especially needs healthcare and you’d be hard pressed to find a pregnant woman in America without insurance. It’s even easier to get when pregnant. She can afford a diagnosis, she just can’t be bothered, because she would never be diagnosed. Instead she wants pandering and accommodations and to invalidate the real experiences of real autistic people, because she thinks she can play doctor and be her own patient.

And I have a support circle and an on many many social groups for autism, and have been for years. I promise I’ve delved into the matter with significantly more dedication and drive then you, with significantly more drive and need for answers and information. I don’t need your advice to just pander to adults wanting a label. Thanks but no thanks.

Avatar

Yes, I've taken adderall with all 3 of my pregnancies. I've seen a MFM doctor to monitor growth and such as well as my OB. I've been on it for 10 years and me being on it while pregnant outweighs the risks of me stopping it.

Avatar

If you mention it to your OB though, a lot of them don't like it, I would specifically ask to be referred to a MFM. They know all about medications and how they affect baby.
