Toddler tantrums when dad is around

When we're on our own, he's mostly fine.. a bit whiney and will throw tantrums occasionally but we mostly get through day to day things without much hassle but as soon as dad is around it's a different story.

I can take him around shop and he's pretty good, I do use reins because he's a wild child and likes to run off. This morning we've been to a couple shops christmas shopping and he will not let either of us hold his reins. Throwing tantrums in shops and then had the biggest tantrum he's had yet all the way home in the car.

Does anyone else have this problem? Is it normal or does he just not like his dad πŸ˜‚

We have reasonably different styles or parenting, I like to try and figure out what's wrong and reason with him but my partner just likes to threaten, eg. If you don't stop you'll go to bed. It really winds me up but as soon as I try to say anything about it he just assumes I'm telling him he's a bad dad πŸ˜’

It’s probably the way his dad is treating him, and threatening him that’s completely deregulating your son. I expect your partner was treated in a similar way by his own parents so he’s just replicating that with no thought about how it feels. Would he be responsive to you suggesting that he remembers how being spoken to like that as a little boy felt, and if maybe he wants to try a different approach for his own son…

But also Christmas shopping can be pretty boring / overwhelming for tots, so that probably had a lot to do with it too. We try and get all our shopping online, just to avoid shops and crowds!

Amen! I’m not in exactly the same situation but my other half riles him! When my little boy is having a tantrum, my other half will try and keep messing around which just winds my 3 year old! I prefer the calm approach that just lets him calm down naturally! But my other half takes it badly too πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

My girl is a nightmare when me and her dad are out with her in public. If it's just me with her though she's normally good, but the second we meet her dad say like at his work, she throws herself on the floor 😊 They like to test us these kids πŸ™ƒπŸ˜‚

Omg this is us!!!
We do fabulous Monday to Friday all day long and as soon as dad gets home the fits begin.
I'm coming to the conclusion that my son knows that we are not on the same page when it comes to parenting. We have very different follow-through methods etc
I think our kids are smart and possibly taking advantage of the situation lol
I'm personally going to try and make an effort to be more of a team with my husband when it comes to disciplining my toddler in hopes that him seeing us working together rather than against each other will improve the whole situation.
I'll be following your thread for more tips because I have no idea if my strategy is going to work lol

Thank you all for the comments. @Sara and @Hayley you've both definitely made me feel better knowing its not just us that it's happening to πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‚

Was the complete opposite today. Went for a long walk around a forest, had lunch out and did a couple shops with no issues whatsoever. We have a really nice day. Was like some sort of miracle 😱
