Croup or just a cold

Hi so my little boy has been not well for two days now, his nose is stuffy one minute then runny the next but his cough sounds so bad, and he was really wheezy last night. It probably sounds stupid but how would I know if it was croup?

Go to doctors if you're worried but in my experience you would definitely know if it was croup. My son had it last year and Ive never been so scared, the way he was gasping for breath and the barking cough it was horrible! It tends to worsen very quickly too so literally within an hour of starting to cough he was really bad we ended up in hospital for steroids as the paramedics couldn't get them in him.

When I completed my first aid course years ago I was told if your child is ever doing something that worries you get a video straight away as they likely won't do it for a doctor. I was recording my son throughout and the doctors knew it was croup within seconds of the recording as the cough is so distinctive x

One of my twins had croup a few weeks ago. She is absolutely fine now. Their cough starts sounding a bit like a bark rather than just a cough. Def see a GP if you can or call 111 if you can't an appt today. We were prescribed a steroid for her, and she took it fairly well.and was miles better the next day.

Thank you, I took a couple of videos at like 5am today but obviously he didn’t want to cough on camera it’s just the wheezing I managed to capture. I’ll take some more today Incase it does get worse though. He doesn’t seem to be gasping for air, I’ll just keep an eye on him xx

I have to agree with Georgia on the try and get a video, even if it's just to get the sound of the cough because my GP was also very ready to dismiss it as a cough/cold until my twin actually coughed after we got her back in the car seat after being examined!

My little boy just recovered from croup, the cough sounds like a seal barking and there’s a distinctive wheeze. I would get your LO checked out, GPs are always happy to see little ones 😊
